"Quantum of Solace" Plot Speculation

What I learned from Quantum of Solace is that the storyline is vaguely similar to Tomorrow Never Dies, but that is no bad thing since in my mind the other three Brosnan movies suffered from being overwritten and don't hold up well to scrutiny. Anyway the basic plot is this:

Mr. White gets captured and interrogated, MI6 learns that he is just the tip of the iceberg and the organization he represents, Quantum, is a highly dangerous and immensely wealthy criminal fraternity with operatives everywhere.

The best lead on the Quantum syndicate is popular industrialist, Dominic Greene, who is currently operating in Bolivia and is suspected of backing the disgraced General Medrano in a coup d'etat, so that Quantum can have exclusive control over Bolivia's water supplies for neferious reasons (most likely financial and resource extortion, but also maybe for a bigger scheme not yet revealed to us).

I don't know if Quantum of Solace can top "Casino Royale" but am sure it will be a kick ass movie none the less, looking forward to it

^ and for the record I liked Tommorow Never Dies too, I found first two Bond movies for Pierce were good and last two were meh.

Naming the bad guys Quantum is kind of lame. The name of the film actually has a meaning, even though a lot of people don't seem to understand it, and by giving the bad guys that name those same confused people will assume it's referring to the organization and the title will make even less sense to them.

So Quantum of Solace isn't about a terrorist name Nero (Pierce Brosnan) who goes back in time to kill James Bond, old James Bond (Sean Connery) follows Nero back and teams up with young James Bond (Daniel Craig) and Bond's mentor 004 (Roger Moore) to stop him?

Now that SPECTRE of the 1960s seems anachronistic today, I wonder what 'world domination' means in the new millennia and how it could be meaningfully achieved.

Also how could Quantum remain hidden for so long?

The trailer gave me a serious License To Kill vibe, with Bond going rogue. I wonder how that works into the story.

Nothing's yet topped "Thunderball".

That is a word for word description of GoldenEye.

And I'm not so enamoured with Thunderball either, though I really liked the SPECTRE conference here.

You mean Quantum would represent a measure of SPECTRE, like quantum of solace means a measure of comfort? I suppose they own the rights to the gardner books, they could bring in Blofeld's daughter to revive SPECTRE under another name, but then that confuses the issue in a Why is DameJudy still around kind of way, since Bond destroyed SPECTRE ...

I think it is probably the makers way of getting around having to blame the world's current set of stock villains (middle east, Koreans), just as SPECTRE was a way around putting everything off on the Russians.

I think it is probably the makers way of getting around having to blame the world's current set of stock villains (middle east, Koreans), just as SPECTRE was a way around putting everything off on the Russians.

SPECTRE and Ernst Stavro Blofeld cannot be used again because of the late Kevin McClory's dickery in regards to their exclusive copyright, but Quantum could be a decent replacement and it could prove itself to be better than the original 1960s syndicate (since SPECTRE was becoming a parody of itself by the time of Diamonds are Forever).

I get the impression Quantum is a consortium of businessmen, scientists, and mercenaries of various types who all somehow have a common cause, but we don't know for sure yet.

And while SPECTRE replaced SMERSH in many film adaptions of Fleming's books, we do get the impression SPECTRE is working for another country in YOLT (either the PRC or NK), while Russians can still be villains in many Bond movies (but they're more often renegades and criminals).

We can still have Iranians, Saudi Arabians, or Russians as secondary villains or allies/pawns for Quantum in future Bond movie.

Frankly I find the idea of the evil crime syndicate completely revolving around an easily parodied supervillain to be somewhat old hat; I want Quantum to be a clandestine alliance of businessmen, scientists, and mercenaries of many stripes who all have a common cause.

I believed the McClory case was thrown out in 2001 and that Spectre was able to be used, but they just didn't want to.
