QUANTUM CLASS STARSHIP IN 3D

Solarbaby

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
I approached a modeller on 3D Warehoue who has made amazing models of existing designs in sketchup. He liked my design for the (then Hawking class) Quantum class and has made a 3d model of it. I am extremely pleased with the results. Here are some images of it. I need to get a better lit model to really capture the design properly but it still looks awesome. What do you think?

I just made a video to show it at every anglehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6Gi1J3JGiM

Wow, that's really nice. Those animations are a nice idea...reminds me of - was it the Intel site? - with the rotating ST09 ships.
I like this ship, those front and rear views give it a very imposing, massive look.

You just described my mother in law!

I'm not sure what that is. In sketchup theres a feature to animate it. I just used screen capture software and converted to a gif.

I'm glad you like. Trint has added more details and made it more aestetically pleasing too. His other models are herehttp://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/search?uq=00227162878547552586&scoring=m

It has been interesting see how far the community is taking Sketchup from where it first started. The work just gets better and better, and one day may rival commercial packages for quality. As it is right now you may have to export it into another rendering package or model type to get any decent shots of it or any proper animations.

The only bit I think he's not improved are the bussards at the fore of the nacelles. The originals look more prominent, while the new ones look too small and not the right colour. Apart from that he's done a great job of realising the ship in 3D.

Now I think about it, if your man can export it into .3ds, .obj or .dxf format I could load it up into Lightwave and see if I can convert it properly. Then it would be a cinch to tweak the surfaces and animate it. With permission from you and Mr Williams we might even add it to the Trek downloads section on my site. If not, then I still say kudos to him for knocking this one out in Sketchup. Very impressed.

Thanks. I shall mention it to him. It would great to see it all fully rendered and textured model. For the purposes I wanted the model it was only to as a study model to copy as a flash image. I am really surprised how well it came out- and this was the first version. I wasn't aware there was a downloads section on the site. Where is it exactly as I can't find it. Thanks

Aesthetically I think there is much to be desired but this baby is definitely ready to go with a green light.

Green light indeed :) :techman:

it looks like something that even John eaves or Doug Drexeler would create :) :techman:

OK guys, I downloaded the Sketchup model and spent an hour or so at work (dont tell anyone!) converting it to Lightwave format. This is just the most basic conversion so far, I didn't have time to do anything other than sort the worst mesh problems and assign surface names to the bits. I'll tidy it up, change the registry for image maps instead of models and then knock out an image or two and maybe an animation.

Right now I'm off to the pub for lunch, more later. Thanks to Messr's Williams and Section31 for the interesting looking ship. Not sure about the inward cant on the warp nacelles, but like the rest of it a lot.

OK, did a little more patching of holes and surface texturing. I even set up lights for the engines and a few spots for details. Here's the results so far...

I have to say that the inward cant on the nacelles started to bug me. They look ok from the rear, but in the forward or underside views it just looks awkward. I took matters into my own hands and switched the nacelles to outward cant to see how it would look, and I think I prefer it. What do you think?

I don't really have a preference either way on the nacelles. The only suggestion I have regards the deflector dishes. Even though they are mostly orange, the blue glow should dominate. I probably should have made the blue segments on the dishes larger or something, but I hadn't considered what would be needed for a photographic quality treatment.

The renders are fantastic. What a thrill to see it in as much reality as any other starship. Thank you Axeman! :bolian:

Actually I changed the deflector from blue with red inserts to light-blue with darker blue inserts as I thought they were too red. They're a little busy looking for my liking, but it's not my design and I dont want to tamper with them too much.

Beautiful shots there. The escape pods look mushy pea green coloured though- is that meant to be like that? On the matter of the nacelle I couldn't tell properly from the last pic how much differnt it was. Personally I do like them the way I designed them because as I wrote in a previous thread before I found some modellers
I took inspiration from several of my favourite ships and tried to tie them into one. Initallially it was going to be to the Miranda class what the Galaxy class was to the constitution class.

I loved the neck of the galaxy class and have included that at the aft of the ship. I loved the oberth's warp engine being connected to the primary hull. I also love the runabout and at the aft top of my ship the engineering section resembes it. I thought Voyagers hull was so sleek and cool when I first saw it so I went for an Intrepid style hull. The twin navigational deflectors are a nod to the Miranada class. It had black rectangles on the aft top section behind the bridge and underneath the roll bar. I don't what they were but I liked the look.
I was trying to capture the look of the Oberth engines being close or connected to the primary hull.

I'm open to changing it though. Could you do another render of a front facing view so I can see the difference please?

From this angle i think the angle of the nacelles make it all seem more uniform in design. And more like the Miranda class which is what this design is mainly paying homage too.

Like I said though i'm open to changes

I noticed the aft top main impulse engine wasn't illuminated like the ones on the "wings". I'm not sure if this was because you didn't realise it was there.

Actually i think you might you be right on the cant. But you make a point of them looking ok from the rear, but in the above pic with the blue grid area it really does look awkward. But from the front I like it haha so we agree but disagree. I think maybe the opposite angle might work better like you suggested
