Q!

Neutral Zone

Captain
Captain
Of all the creations of beings in TNG I have found Q the strangest. He can be annoying but also funny, when he is in an episode you want to skip to the next but find yourself just watching no matter what. I thought that it was fitting that Q was in the first and last episodes and was surprised that he was never included in of the movies.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on Q?

I personally find Q to be quite funny. I always enjoy episodes with him in them and I love the way the crew reacts to him, Picard especially. It is refreshing to see someone on the show get under Picard's skin and piss him off so badly. It was fun to see Picard get annoyed/pissed and even raise his voice from time to time and Q was best for that in a humorous kind of way (when he wasn't judging them or introducing them to the borg).

Thinking back I actually prefer him when he was in the "lighter" episodes although I loved AGT and Tapestry. He was a great foil for the crew and Picard alike. Plus he gets bonus points for bringing a mariachi band on the bridge.

I agree, I watched that this evening, not only the but also trying to tempt Riker and even better Worf with girls and cigars. It was a good idea portraying Q without his powers, funny to say the least.

My only thought - I don't really like the character. He's annoying and over-rated. I haven't seen them (besides "Death Wish") but as I understand it, his Voyager appearances were even worse.

Death Wish was one of the best Voyager episodes. A good story and script with very good performances from both Delancie and Graham.

Q and the Gray was a fun if superficial Q comedy story that benefited from the banter between Q and Janeway. It got silly when it re-entered the Q Continuum and turned another super race into a group of costumed clowns.

Q2 was just an abomination of a story. Completely pointless and widely regarded as one of the worst Voyager episodes.

I have liked all of the Q episodes to some degree (usually a pretty darn high degree ;) - I can't help it, I do love that guy), and I agree with Dark Journey that "Death Wish" is actually a great Q episode. I have never understood the scorn that some seem to have for it.

"Q2"? Not so much - it would be for me the worst of the Q episodes out of all the Trek series. But "Death Wish" is really good - at times funny and at other times a bit thought provoking, really.

Deathwish is by far the best Voyager Q appearance, Q in the Gray is just used for the hell of it and getting Q in there because he's so popular, same with Qpid. I mean sure the episodes are funny but they don't latch onto the series

Q was an important character that was there right at the beginning, evolved throughout the series, and was very important at the end too, however being apart of so much Trek made him susceptible to the bad early writing and a few terrible moments as time passed, but remember Q in "Encounter At Farpoint", in "Q Who", in "Deja Q", in "Tapestry", and in "All Good Things, he tests characters, he has been a teacher, a herold to danger, and a judge. Q is a very important character with a lot of clout and not because of his omnipotence but because of what he did in TNG.:vulcan:

I thought Deathwish was actually pretty cringeworthy. A Q wanting asylum on a ship full of mortals. Why would the Q even think about recognizing that?

His TNG appearances were the best. There he was still omnipotent, a mystery. In Voyager, he and the Continuum got dismantled into yet another sort of vulnerable aliens of the week.

I liked Q quite a bit whenever I could get him. He added a sense of humor and frustration that played out really well on the sometimes-too-serious TNG (being that I don't really count occasional eyebrow-raising and goofy musical riffs to "remind" the audience something funny has occurred, humorous).

And, by the time he'd crashed VOY, I thought the series had already jumped the shark, so what the hell. The only time I didn't really care for his presence was his DS9 appearance, but that's mostly because I can't stand Vash as a character.

John de Lancie's appearances on DS9 and Voyager were atrocious and disappointing as a Trekker, he could have done so much more on those shows but in the end his home was TNG where he was always testing Picard.

Pfft... Q was glorious in TNG, but one of my very favorite Q moments will still be the boxing match with Sisko.

The interaction between Picard and Q is priceless, it brought out some great yells from Picard. He also causes entertaining reactions in other cast members.
