Q for hardcore ST: Original Series Fans

(Simple yes or no and why or why not)
Do you like ST: Deep Space 9
I kinda liked it when it first debuted, but then I discovered Babylon 5 and never looked back.

Not sure if I'm a "hardcore" original Star Trek fan, but I'll answer anyway:

Yes, I like DS9. I had a lot of fun following it when it was on and wondering each summer about what was going to happen in the overarching story. Now that I look back on the show, I find that it's outstanding individual episodes that give the show its lasting quality.

Yes.

But maybe I don't count as hardcore TOS...honestly I wouldn't be here except for DS9 and being here rekindled my interest in TOS, especially with the movie news and all...

I should like to add one thing: while I prefer TOS to its progeny overall, I find the Cardassians to be the single most intriguing alien race in all of Trek. They are what the Klingons could have been had they not taken a wrong turn into Honor Oaf Land. And even then, the Cardassians have a more interesting anatomy (i.e. make-up design).

A question for hardcore TOS fans about DS9 in the TNG forum?

I think ya made a wrong turn somewhere along the line, Photon.
Maybe he shoulda taken a left turn at Sarpeidon?

It's my third favorite after TOS and TNG, but that is only based on the first four seasons. I've never seen the final three seasons of DS9, (though I did make a point to tune in for the "Tribbles" episode and the ones featuring Kor).

I never got into DS9. I dunno, something about the characters never quite clicked with me. I haven't seen the later seasons, probably past S2, I only caught a few dozen, but I never saw anything that made me change my mind.

And the tribbles episode was almost as bad as the Mirror universe in Enterprise. It seemed more like an excuse to show TOS scenes, rather than a full fledged concept. The Ent episode was just a bizaare excuse to have the cast of Enterprise wear TOS costumes. I don't like that crap, because it seems a bit too forced.

Deep Space Nine was, in my considered opinion, by far the best Trek series of the modern era. And FWIW, it's the only Trek series (including TOS) for which I've bought the entire series box set.

DS9 had some wonderful episodes, but I've only seen about half the show, if that much. The problem is I will not usually watch a Star Trek TV episode that has a Ferengi in it. IMO, those loathsome creatures are the worst alien ever from any sci-fi production and I just can’t stomach more than a few minutes of them. I've turned off many a DS9 episode that I might have enjoyed because those damn creatures were taking up to much screen time.

TOS fan here. I enjoyed DS9 probably most of the spinoffs, because I found the characters the most likable and human. I lost interest during the whole Dominion thing, though.

Hard core TOS fan and DS9 is my favorite of the spin offs. It had original and interesting characters and often did not always have a happy ending.

I just watched the visitor yesterday and still found myself sniffling at older Jake's death.

I didnt even mind the baseball game with the vulcans in a later episode (Hey we got to hear the UFP anthem finally :) )

It added depth to the Star Trek Universe while not detracting from TNG

I liked Ds-9. Interesting characters and some good episodes.Decent sense of humor.

However, i find that many of the episodes don't have great re-watchability.

I haven't seen many episodes, but what I did see, I enjoyed well enough. I will watch it eventually, and when I do, I expect I'll probably enjoy it. (Hey, I like ENT and VOY. I'd say the odds are pretty good that I'll like TNG and DS9.)

Hmm...I'm also planning to watch B5, and by coincidence will probably end up watching that before DS9. I wonder if that will color my views of the latter show.

DS9...I enjoyed "Far Beyond the Stars" but that's about it. One thing I noticed about the various Star Trek series: TOS started out stong and got (generally) progressively worse, but I didn't mind because I knew the show could be great. The other series started out bad and got (generally) progressively better, but I didn't care because I had that bad taste in my mouth from episodes like "Angel One", "Code of Honor" and "If Wishes Were Horses".

During the original TNG run, there were weeks when I actually said "I'll never watch this piece of crap again".

No Trek has the re-watchability factor of TOS. Indeed, the only show with that kind of re-watchability--for me--is The Sopranos.

Yes. Best series of the modern Trek. The characters were more realistic like TOS. DS9 celebrated the differences between characters and allowed friction. TNG was too sterile and PC.
