Q & A for Newbies and Casual fans? (spoilers)

I'm not a devoted trekkie and only really followed DS9 closely so I don't know Trek canon very well. I've had a couple of questions since watching the movie so I hope it's ok to start a new thread. It's a bit embarassing though, since I think they're really stupid question.

1) First of all, is this movie a different timeline from all of Trek we've had before or is it the same? Did Kirk's father really die the way he did and was original Vulcan really destroyed, with Spock's mum lost in the disaster?

2) Who's Nero? Is he a Romulan? He doesn't look like the way I thought Romulans looked or was I always wrong about how a Romulan looked? *Scratches head*

3) Did Uhura have a first name originally? What is it by the way? I didn't catch it when Spock said it. Was Spock and Uhura ever together before this movie? How do you all feel about Spock/Uhura? This really doesn't bug me since I don't really care but just asking out of curiosity.

Ok, more if I think of anything else.

Anyway, a few thoughts about the movie:

I enjoyed the movie but I'm still bleh about Chris Pine. I don't dislike him but he feels really bland to me. To be fair, I've had a bias against him since he was cast. I still wish a different actor was cast so I could like Kirk better.

I was really happy and surprised when Nimoy showed up (yes, I was that spoiler free) since I've watched a few great episodes of the original Trek and loved Spock.

My favorites in the movie was McCoy and Spock. I didn't really like Uhura but the rest were great.

Re: Q & A for Newbies and Casual fans?

1) Different timeline, Kirk's father's fate is unknown, Vulcan was not destroyed and Spock's mother died of natural causes some time before the Next Generation.
2) Nero is a Romulan who has shaved his head and marked his skin as a sign of sorrow because of the destruction of Romulus.
3) Uhura's first name has never been mentioned on screen, however Nyota (hope the speeling is correct was the name picked by the original actress and that is the one they have decided to use.
