Purist Sees The Light

"There is no reason to create a movie in an established universe and not respect what has gone before. It is a slap in the face to the creators that worked so hard on those previous works and a slap in the face to all the 'fans' that liked it just the way it was."

How do you feel about TMP, TWOK, and TNG?

Generally, I like them just fine. To me they have problems,
but for the most part the people that did them did follow what
had been done before.

Yes, there were things different. Sometimes it was a mistake,
sometimes it was intentional - and many times when it was
intentional they gave a fictional reason why it was different.

They want a different looking ship, show it getting updated.
Want a really different looking ship, set the story a hundred
years later and say its the 'next' ship in the series.

Ok, they intentionally did some things different and didn't
give a reason: 'new' Klingons and no explaniation (in the
context of the Star Trek universe). I didn't like that. I
would have liked a reason in the context of the story or, get
this, maybe they didn't have to use Klingons at all. Its a
new bunch of bad guys.

And there are numerous other examples...

In this case, if (and I repeat "IF") this movie makes dramatic
changes in the established 'history' of the Kirk-period with no
good reason (and 'just because they can' is not a good reason),
then its just wrong. Then its just a new bunch of yahoo's that
could be using their talents to tell any story in the whole of
the real and imagined universes, that are ripping off the long-
standing fans of Star Trek (a fan base absolutely unique in all
media) and giving the finger to the creators of the original
works of art, just to make a few quick bucks.
