Pumped Up for Karaoke Idol

As I mentioned in another thread, my employer holds a yearly karaoke competition as part of the Asian-Pacific Heritage Month in May. Last year's was by far the best event; there was a panel of judges similar to American Idol, and our outgoing General Manager was absolutely fantastic as Simon Cowell. My co-workers and I participated as a group, and we sang "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" by The Beatles, and doggone it, we sounded like a bunch of kindergarten kids!

So this year I'm thinking about doing something really gutsy: performing solo. My work buddies have been hounding me all week, asking what, if any, I'm going to sing for the event this coming Thursday. To be honest, I'm not even 100% sure I want to do it. I love music. I love doing karaoke at family parties. I'm not even going to comment on my screechy baritone voice, but a part of me just wants to have fun. Most of the participants don't really take themselves seriously, and that's the point. They're just doing it for fun.

Here's a list of possible songs I've considered (I just need one). I like Oldies, ballads, Easy Listening, but I've also tried contemporary songs.

  • "Speak Softly Love" by Andy Williams - It has a nice melody from the Godfather films, but it sounds too serious, and I want something a little more upbeat.
  • "The Way You Look Tonight" by Frank Sinatra - It's got a cool and jazzy vibe.
  • "Cruisin'" by Huey Lewis and Gwyneth Paltrow - This is a duet performance. I'm not sure if I can find a female co-worker in time to perform with.
  • "Bailamos" by Enrique Iglesias - This happens to be one of my favorite songs; it's got a sexy Latin beat that's a bit out of my character, but I could see myself having fun with it.
So does anyone here like karaoke? What would you sing if you had a chance?

I love Karaoke for the simple reason that I can't play the instruments required to back me up in the songs I like to sing. So if I were to pick songs to sing at this Karaoke event, they would include:

"More than a Feeling" by Boston.
"Ain't No Sunshine (When She's Gone)" by Bill Withers.
"Sister Golden Hair" by America.
"Warm Sound" by Zero 7.
"You're the Inspiration" by Chicago.
"Year of the Cat" by Al Stewart.

Good choices, J.! :techman: Stop by my house sometime. I think I have all of those song titles available. I have an Entertech 11000 cordless dual mic system that came pre-programmed with 2,400+ English songs. I gotta admit most of my selections are a bit outdated, though I have a few Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys tunes. :D

Well, this sucks. None of my colleagues in accounting (except one) want to do a solo or group performance this year. So much for team-building. I'm tempted to not even do it out of spite.

Woo-hooooo!!! I did it! The karaoke event today at work went really well. I performed "Bailamos" by Enrique Iglesias, despite my stuffy nose and limited voice, and ended up in 3rd place (Top 3) and won a small prize.

You know what really felt great about the whole experience? Having the courage to stand up and sing solo in front of 200+ co-workers and just having fun! I wasn't even "in it to win it." I wasn't expecting any prize, but I was glad to have the support and cheers of the audience. It was surreal; this is without a doubt the gutsiest thing I've done in a long time!

Well, I'm Asian, so I do it more often than others. Give it a try. I certainly didn't need beer or a shot of tequila to get up and do it.
