Publishers planning ads in e-books

I can see them inserting an ad mid-story, with a timer that forces you to stare at it for 30 seconds before continuing to read. How'd you like that?

I'd just do what I do with ads on TV or Hulu: look elsewhere for 30 seconds.

Yeah. I just hit mute and find something to do. Usually just checking other sites, maybe even write a quick post if it is a minute or more of ads.

Yeah, but you don't pay for standard Hulu. Now, if the ads meant the ebooks that contained them were free, I would be very happy to put up with them.

And what happens when advertisers don't want their ads appearing in "controversial" novels or by "controversial" authors? Does that mean that the publisher drops the author? Great, my book-reading experience is now just like TV. :ack:

If these authors already made a name for themselves then they could (should, perhaps?) go the self-release-route - which is a lot easier with eBooks (and the reason for a lot of trash in eBook-shops ;)).

Why is this in Trek Lit? Why are any of the ebook threads that never talk about Trek ebooks here, for that matter? Those of us who still read the print editions don't start topics about exciting new trends in paper production.

I dunno, we have debated the different paper qualities, royalty ratios and font sizes of Pocket/Gallery trades vs MMPBs and hardcovers.

I don't like e-books and cheerfully await their demise, so -- no skin off my back.

Why are you in this thread if all you can be is a pest?

And it means no wasted space at the end with advertising I don't need and don't want.

Did you used to rip out the advertising pages from the MMPBs?

I did if they were the ones that were the really annoying cards in the middle. The ones at the end, nope.

The last thing I want is for my novel reading experience to be more TV like. Read for seven minutes and then have two minutes of commercials.

Would you accept movies with commercials inserted during the run?

On free, broadcast TV sure. But not during pay-per-view for example.

If they're going to be putting in ads the books had better be free. I'm not going to pay for the honour of having ads in my previously ad-free novel reading experience.

I've watched movies with commercials on Hulu. They don't cut any content so I put up with.

Free. I haven't found any decent movies on there that I haven't already seen in ages.

That was supposed to be put up with it.

Free with commercials is OK. That's the price you pay for free.

If they're going to start dropping ads in the middle of my novels (i.e. in the chapter breaks) they'd better be giving the books away.
