PSP or DS?

I'm probably not going to buy the super duper ultra mega limited edition flamethrower/toaster/hairdryer/Nintendo DS/PSP combination plate like some have suggested. I'm not going to go THAT crazy over it. I'm planning on just buying some used piece of junk from the nearby used game store and shave 30 bucks off the Wal-Mart price. I think what's making it hard is that I can't tell which would take more getting accustomed to; a touch screen or all the buttons being impossible to reach without moving your entire hand (or so the reviewers say).

I got my silver PSP-2000 two years ago, and I've used it almost every day since.

It's my default MP3 player now (I have an 80 gig Archos, but I use that more for videos and storage) plus I use it to check the web, store photos and so forth. I used Skype a lot on it (with a separate headset) when I was back in Ireland, but don't need that feature so much while I'm here in Canada.

Also, game-wise, there are titles like Crisis Core, Dissidia, Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow, Gran Turismo and others (like the three Fate games I have for it) which have had a fair bit of use already - plus titles like MGS: Peace Walker and Final Fantasy Agito XIII on the way which I'm looking forward to...

...and ones like Gundam vs Gundam Next Plus and Fate/Extra I hope to see picked up for Western release.

Plus, I like hooking it up to the TV and using it that way.

I'd say that if you wanted a PSP, I'd definitely suggest not treating it just as a gaming machine (though I believe it holds its own, for my use at least) but as an overall media device.

I'm not so sure on the Go, though. A smaller screen, new proprietary connections, no UMD use and the switch away from MemoryStick Duo add up to an option which doesn't appeal to me overly much... at least, compared to what I have already.

^ I thought the same thing about the PSP almost two years ago; the damn thing is still going. It has virtually no support from companies, sales are abysmal (fortunately they started off really high), and piracy is killing what little life the system has. But the thing refuses to die. Games keep coming out for it and it slowly keeps selling. I don't know how it does it, even with Japan's support.

This information isn't really accurate, while the PSP doesn't reach anywhere near DS's stratospheric sales numbers in the US, it usually sells around what the 360 does each month.

In Japan it's another story, it's been selling extremely well over there for over a year now.

The PSP is not about to die any time soon. There's also a wealth of quality software in the works or available. We had a thread recently with some similar discussion on the PSP where I posted this list of titles.

I don't expect to see new portable hardware from either Sony or Nintendo for at least another two years.

Being an owner of a psp, ds, and an ipod touch, my favorite out of the three is the psp. But really in the end it comes down to the games you want to play. Ipod has lots of flash type games, the ds has nintendo games, and the psp has playstation games.

Ipod is better for games you want to play for only a few minutes, personally playing longer games doesn't seem to work as well on the system for me. I've purchased civ and sim city for ipod and don't really enjoy playing either on the format. The DS tends to get heavy play once a year once a game I really wants comes out, but after that it sits unused. The psp tends to be the travel system of choice because of it's versatility. It sort acts as a catchall device for travel since it can play movies, surf the net, play music and play both simple and substantial games. The ipod does a better job at internet though since the psp's internet is super slow, and has better music play back if you prefer having your music managed by itunes.

If you're in to modding both the ds and psp do pretty well at playing roms for older systems, with the psp being better with a larger screen and more processing power.

I like the game choice for the PSP a lot more then the DS. I'm not really sure though, it's a pretty close call on which is better.

I travel fairly often, and my PSP is my constant companion - I burn DVDs to it to watch on the plane, and I've played the hell out of quite a few games (Crisis Core, Tekken, GTA). I'm playing the Phantasy Star RPG right now and enjoying it quite a bit. For me it's the best choice.

As others have said, they're two very different systems and it's not really a question of which is "better" - for some folks the DS is perfect, while the PSP is the best match for others. I'd really take some time and think about exactly what you want out of the device before making your purchase.
