At a conference in Tokyo today Sony finally revealed the heavily speculated successor to the PSP. It's just been revealed, so there's not much information available on it, but here's the highlights:

http://kotaku.com/5744485/the-psp-2-revealed

Specs:

CPU: TBD
RAM: TBD
Storage: TBD
Display: 5 inch OLED with 960 x 544 resolution
Wireless: WiFi, 3G, GPS
Inputs: Touchscreen, touch sensitive back panel, D-pad, L/R shoulder buttons, standard PlayStation buttons

Games:

Uncharted
Killzone
WipeOut
Resistance
LittleBigPlanet
Hustle Kings
Hot Shots Golf

Also revealed was the playstation suite for android. Turns any android phone into a PSP basically.

It's called the "NGP" for now.

Backwards compatible with PSP games, it seems.
Lots of location based and augmented reality features.

Here's how Sony describes it: "NGP adopts a new game medium, a small flash memory based card, dedicated for NGP software titles. Taking advantage of the flash memory feature, this innovative card can store the full software titles plus add-on game content or the game save data directly on to the card. By adopting flash memory based card, SCE will be able to provide game cards with higher capacity in the future, allowing developers to store more game data to deliver rich and immersive games."

This part has me a bit confused. Are they employing a DS type system where games are released on cartridges or are they selling proprietary memory sticks that games are downloaded to?

Spec sheet.

Really, all this is missing is a phone. :p
I also can't imagine how much this will cost. 300? 400?

^ I got my PSP just because of Valkyria Chronicles 2. I have a feeling I'm gonna get a PSP2 just because of the Uncharted game.

It looks like it will come in 3G and non-3G versions and will be "priced appropriately" so you won't need to get a "second job" as you did for the PS3.

I'm looking forward to VC3 actually. Whether I end up playing that on a PSP or PSP2 is the big question though. I mean, I hope they start making PSP games with dual analog sticks in mind now.

Good to hear about the 3G and non-3G variants (this would have died a very quick death if it required any kind of 3G contract), but I have my doubts that Sony's going to price this correctly. Even though it's not due out for awhile I'm guessing the hardware the PSPNGP is packing isn't likely to come cheap.

Looks like a nice piece of hardware. Still, I'm skeptical than there's room for another handheld, with the DS and iPhone/iPad pretty much owning portable gaming right now.

I agree. If it had PS2 support then it'd be a different story. And frankly, at this point there's no reason it shouldn't.

It's nice that someone is pushing the hardware and all, but I can't say I'm interested. I'll take Nintendo's portable philosophy over Sony's any day of the week.

... but not at $250.

So I've never played a PSP but I have DS.

What graphic quality are we talking here? Will a PSP2 look as good as a PS2 console game? Better? Worse?

The 3DS is superior to the PS2, so I actually almost believe Sony's claim that the PSP2 will match the PS3.

If it really is supposed to be as powerful as a PS3, I don't see why it can't support PS2 downloads.

I guess it depends on service price/time, but even a 3G connection should be able to download a PS2 game in under an hour-and-a-half. And there's likely to be 4G upgrade at some point. Plus, there's always PS3 and WIFI connectivity to consider.

It's just the one thing that everyone I know really wanted. It still remains the most successful console to date, and I think Sony is making a big mistake in not allowing it.

Oh, we'll get PS2 support one way or the other. The second way might take a bit longer, but at least we'll get fast forwarding and save states.

In reality it probably wont be able to match the PS3but it should look close enough on the small screen. The specs looks wonderful and this SHOULD be a killer device. However the PSP should have been a killer device and ended up being a huge disappointment, at least for me. The games just didn't have that pick up and go quality that I find necessary for portable gaming, not to mention the PS Network store still seems stuck in 2006 to me. I should be able to hookup to any wifi spot and start downloading movies, trailers , music and games in only a few second. I want this device for the hardware but I have a strong feeling 3DS v PSP2 is going to turn out exactly like DS v PSP.

As for price I'll put my wager on at minimum 299, but very likely 399.
