PS5 Pro And Other Midgenerational Upgrades

Wow, if true, that's quite the boondongle! But on the other hand, there's a chance that it hasn't been patched to be PS5 Pro enhanced... yet. But still, when you hear those numbers it sounds terrible just from an image standpoint.

On GTA6 (and others) hitting 4K 60FPS, Digital Foundry says: Unlikely. Hahaha, Oh man. This keeps getting worse for Sony.

Alan Wake 2 is a game that is technologically beyond the capability of any console to run at its best, and beyond a lot of lower end PCs as well.

It does look great on a 4090 though. But then a near $2000 graphics card should get you the best.

Yeah i am going to say GT6 will come out on both the PS5 and Pro at 30 fps, then 2 years later a pro enhnaced 50 fps for £50, then 2 years later a PS6 version at £80 60 fps. lol

Which does sound pretty spot on for Rockstar. Gonna be lots of foaming at the mouth! "But... But... my PS5 Pro can't hit 4k 60? What kind of BS is this!? Sony promised 60 FPS!" It does raise some very interesting ethical questions about what a console manufacturer should be able to promise. IMHO, If it can't frankly do it reliably, then they should not claim it. And streaming videos is one thing, but this being a video game console, advertising it on the box and not making a clear distinction is the whole reason people are confused as the PS4 and PS4 Pro were both advertised as 4K. If your videogame console can't hit the frames that it suggests it should in a videogame, then that is very misleading.

And the fun continues lol
(2 hours long, so you may want to set it to 1.25 speed, as they talk slowly anyway)

But colour me not surprised that upscaling to 4k is still going to be something on a £700 console.

I got to thinking and I wouldn't be surprised if GTA6 and others actually gets graphically downgraded to reach their targets. I mean, we've all seen trailers that have looked much better than the actual games, ie WatchDogs, and there are even some that claim that RDR2 (GTA6's closest comparison) got a graphical downgrade after its release, and if that were to happen, it would add even more fuel to the fire. On the other hand, RDR2 is still one of the most graphically impressive games of its generation. So, I don't know.

Horizon Zero Dawn is getting a "next gen remaster". Of all the games that could, it's one that doesn't need it, but my guess is that it's going to be the PS5 Pro "killer app"...
It doesn’t unless you play Forbidden West first. That game has some eye popping visuals and makes the first game look like it was drawn in crayon. But if you play Zero Dawn first or alone it’s a great looking game. It really is only that HFW looks so great that makes HZD look less than stellar.

Sony pulled it a few months ago so it’s not a surprise that it’s being remastered. Also since it’s a Sony IP it makes sense they’re gonna give them an early dev kit and tell them to turn it into showstopper visually. Showing off the before and after will make the Pro look insane if they can get it anywhere near HFW.

The weird thing is Guerilla gave it a 4k60 update specifically for PS5... and assets in last-gen games upscale just fine.

I guess they could do a ray-tracing reflections patch for it (and that's all, even the Pro would chug with more)? But to be honest even that seems excessive effort. Most people who want to play it in top fidelity will have played it on PC with mods, and I don't think it'd sell that many consoles.

These remasters are getting a little out of hand. I could understand if it was an older game that wasn't playable anymore on a current-gen console, but we're talking about one of the best-looking PS4 games still playable on the PS5. All it needs is a PS5 Pro patch, as I'm guessing they're doing this to have it ready for the PS5 Pro. But they seem to be taking Naughty Dog's approach of remastering games and selling them as new games. And to be honest, this is what the entire generation has felt like. Remasters! Come on! And Sony wants us to believe the PS5 Pro is the most powerful console? For which games?? They're all going to be remasters, it looks like!

Yeah, whoever told them it was a good idea to put out a PS5 Pro should... well, I don't know if they deserve to be fired, but it was a terrible idea, especially in the way it was announced and executed. The climate is much different to the one when the PS4 Pro was announced, and I know it might have sounded good on paper, but the backlash can't be good. Even as a niche, I just can't see it. Sometimes even niches have their limits.

So, question to those who don't have a PS5 yet and were waiting for a PS5 Pro. And I know there are some out there. Are you now just going to get a regular PS5?

I can't speak for everyone but I have a few gaming friends who don't have a PS5 yet and they all said they're gonna get a PS5 slim or a regular PS5. I would do the same if I was in their position. They all said they held off buying a PS5 for various reasons and were hoping the PS5 Pro would be SOMEWHAT affordable and bring noticable upgrades but since neither has turned out to be the case they're just gonna go with the less pricey option.

Digital Foundry also raised a good point that there was a better justification for the PS4 Pro (the move towards 4K and 60FPS).

Whereas for the PS5 Pro, we have more detailed background foliage (computer - maximum magnification!).

It is completely unnecessary but I think the idea is to show off the shiny so I’d definitely expect ray tracing. But what I think they will do is show PS4 Horizon vs PS5 Pro. That would be something dramatic to show off the tech. Of course it’s a bit disingenuous because of those interim updates but I think that’s what they will do. Sony also has somewhat of a history with updating console versions after a PC release. They did the same thing with Spider*Man which got a remaster after PC release. And while the original looked good the post-PC release on PS5 looked a helluva lot better and a lot of that was tied to things like reflection and ray tracing.

Well this just keeps getting better, as Sony have just announced 2 30th anni limited edition versions of both the ps5 and pro.......limited to about 12000 editions...........what is that you say, "how much"!, well funny enough that little detail seems to has slipped Sony's mind, but if i were to guess, i would say they have been spooked by the uproar of the ps5 pro price, so i imagine they will just quietly release the price later today with no fanfare. Lol

But i am going to say £900 for the pro edition......any takers? Lo!

Yeah, that'd a good idea. I got my PS5 Slim last year and I'm happy with it. I think my favourite thing about it is the UI. It's just snappy. The previous UI of the PS3-PS4 era were fairly clunky in comparison.

Yep, and that's what I've said too. The PS4 came out a time when 4K 60FPS weren't a thing when it originally released, then TVs came along that featured 4K, and the solution was to engineer a stop-gap measure in the form of an upgrade that would take advantage of the new TV features. There's no such thing now going on between the TV and Console requiring an upgrade. Now it's just simple greed on behalf of Sony, as MS hasn't itself announced a mid-generation update like this one.

Sony can't seem to read the room. If Sony does indeed price it this way, it'd be official to say they're way out of touch. That'd be $1219 CND. For a console. Ouch! And that's without the tax. Double Ouch. But hey, I'm looking at the announcement, and they're including the stand... Wait, what? And Dualsense Charging Station. :wtf:

That makes the price of PS5 Pro especially bad in light of all this.

I wonder, if maybe they've decided to include the stand with the base PS5 Pro afterall. But nah, who am I kidding. It's Sony. It's clear now that Sony is nickel and diming people and don't respect their playerbase.

That Retro Design PS5 is only going to make one group happy: Scalpers. They're gonna buy them all off using their trustworthy bots (as far as I know it's a limited edition?) and we'll have a "PS5 at outrageous prices" situation all over again. Sigh.
