PS3 - What to play next?

I am not a big gamer, but every once in a while I get into a video game mood. I just finished playing my way through all of the Assassin's Creed games, and now I'm not sure where to go next.

I am a fan of 3rd person games. Basically, I want to run around and jump and climb and shoot and/or stab bad guys. So far my favorite games/series have been Uncharted, Arkham Asylum, Assassin's Creed, and Infamous. I went to Best Buy today and browsed the PS3 section, but nothing really popped out at me. Everything I want to play hasn't been released yet.

I do NOT like 1st person shooters. I tried playing the Mass Effect series, and despite its popularity, I just could not get into it. Too much stopping to have meaningless conversations. It was just so boring.

Any ideas?

Skyrim, though designed to be a first person fantasy RPG works as a third person game as well. Has an immense open world and many hours of play time if you do the sub quests.

Red Dead Redemption is similar in design and playability and has several expansions, I believe it is also on sale in PSN. The Western setting might not be appealing to you though.

God of War series comes to mind.

As for upcoming, Naughty Dog is releasing a post-apocalyptic game called The Last One Of Us which looks cool.

Resident Evil 5 is similar in style to Uncharted and the storyline isn't too deep that you'd get lost by not playing previous games.

I just bought a PS3 off my brother and since it didn't with any games worth playing (FIFA, PES, Ashes...zzzzzzzzzzzz) I've been scrambling to find something good, without spending too much cash.

So far I've bought Valkyria Chronicles (third person turn based tactical combat), The Tomb Raider trilogy (it 'twas only a tenner and so far they're a lot of fun!), Beyond Good and Evil HD (best game ever) and Journey (...)

If you're not familiar with BG&E then try out the demo on PSN. Seriously, it's one of those massively underrated gems! Or at least it was until every who played it kept saying it's underrated. Now it's probably just "rated", but it's still *really* good!

I've had my eye on Red Dead Redemption, but I think I'll wait until the price comes down a bit more. Same with the 'Eco/Shadow of Colossus' and the MGS sets. Mostly because I don't want to spend too much but partly because I have my eye on 'The Last of Us'. Not *that* looks like a day one purchase to me!

I might also recommend Deus Ex: HR (I own it on PC) but I haven't actually gotten around to completing it yet. Come to think of it I'm not even certain it's on PS3.

But the meaningless ones are the funniest! :p

Have you played the Prince of Persia games.

I tried playing Red Dead Redemption a while back, too, but I just couldn't get into it. That world was a little too open...took forever to do anything.

There are a lot of people who have complained about that after not liking it, but that's perhaps one of my favourite things about it. The wide open landscape really makes the game for me. Just knowing that there's a vast space to play around in helps give it the feel of a western, of wide open unknown expanses that you do eventually get to know very well as you're playing. I don't think it would have had quite the same effect if the play area had been smaller and more constrained. But hey, not everyone has to like everything out there :) I do have to say though that it's a game that really grows on you over time.

As for 3rd person games in general, I really liked Uncharted 2, so after I finished that, I went out and bought the Tomb Raider trilogy, which I've yet to complete because I've been distracted by other games, and I really like Infamous from what I've played of it, enough to make me want the sequel.

Well, the good thing about buying RDR is that after I got tired of playing it, my roommate started playing it and beat it with 100% completion...so at least it got played.

I'll second the Prince of Persia trilogy on the PS2. The first one is by far the best in the trilogy, so you're jumping head-first into greatness. An HD remake was released on the PS3, so you can go cheap and pick up the PS2 version for like $5-10, or splurge for the HD.

The PoP trilogy is fairly easy with minimal/moderate combat and a huge focus on acrobatics. You'll spend 90% of the game swinging, jumping, and sliding to your goal. Not to mention the brilliant, movie-quality storyline and well-developed main characters.

Well, PS3 isn't backwards compatible, so I couldn't go with the PS2 version. I didn't see any of these at Best Buy when I was there; I completely forgot about that series.

RDR was my favorite gaming experience thus far on this generation console. It did kind of drag a little in the middle, but overall, an epic game with an epic story.

You mentioned Arkham Asylum as a favorite of yours.... Have you tried it's sequel, Arkham City? My favorite game in 2011. I've never played a game as responsive and well engineered. When fighting, Batman responds to your every button mash as you intended. When you do die, you feel as though you somehow let Batman down and not that the game didn't respond to you. It is an open world game, but it also very directed.

inFAMOUS is another great franchise. inFAMOUS 2 was just pure awesome!

Yes, I've played both Arkham games...anxiously awaiting the next one.

As for inFAMOUS, I loved the first one and thought the second one was total crap. The gameplay was okay, but I much preferred the story of the first one.

Have you tried telltale's The Walking Dead Video Game via the PSN? It really is very excellent.

I had no idea there was such a thing.

And that reminds me...I need to get caught up on that show, too.

I was looking through my games and realized that I bought Little Big Planet 2, but I never even opened it. I enjoyed the first one, so I think number 2 might be my next game. Something a little different from the running around and stabbing people in the throat that I've been doing the last couple months.
