I arose this morning to find a PlayStation Home beta key sitting in my inbox, so after playing it for a bit I thought I'd just pretend for a moment that anyone cares what I think and share some impressions with you.
Firstly, the initial download is about 80mb. After that there's a 20mb patch. When you install the software, it reserves 3GB of HDD space. Initially, there are 6 areas available to you - your neato apartment, Home Square (which is just a hub), the shopping centre, bowling alley and, err...I forget the other ones. Each one requires an additional one-time download of between 20mb and 40mb before you can access.
The character customisation thingo can be as involved as you want it to be. The ability to mould your character's features far exceeds the Miis and Mii-toos and may even leave Oblivion in the dust - even if no option presently exists for you to cast yourself as a high elf. The clothing and accessories are pretty limited, so expect to see lots of people running around with blue tshirts and denim jeans.
At present, the various stores in the shopping centre are empty. There's nothing to buy, even if you wanted to, which means reshaping your apartment and your avatar is pretty limited at this point.
But yeah...After the initial excitement wore off and I realised that there was absolutely nothing to do in this world, I kind of went back to wondering what the hell this is really all about and where it's all going. Nobody has yet explained to me why I'd want to sit my avatar in a virtual movie theatre to watch a trailer when I could just download it from the PSN and watch it via the XMB. Similarly, I don't know why I'd want to wait a few minutes for Home to boot up in order to get into a game of Warhawk, when I can already see who is playing from inside the game's extensive menus.
