You may or may not know that Trek BBS undergoes pruning. This is when topics that haven't had any replies within a certain time period are removed from the board. This is primarily to keep the size of the database down and the search engine running.
The pruning has actually been offline for a spell, and I need to get it back online as part of my maintenance programme. But because things are running pretty smoothly, I decided to revisit the pruning schedule. What follows is a list of all forums and the length of inactive time before a topic in that forum is considered out of date. I've not reduced any, but I have increased quite a few which I hope will be a positive move to preserve more topics.
For those that are suddenly worried about disappearing topics, this is nothing new and it has been Trek BBS practice for years. Only topics that are inactive (i.e. no recent replies) will be deleted. Moderators can opt to "keep" certain topics, so if something has to be preserved for some reason the moderator for that forum can do that (but just because you think a topic is quite "cool" or something, I'm not sure that that is justification!).
As with the search engine changes (I've extended the amount of results you can receive to 200, and dropped the time you have to wait between searches), this is a case of waiting and seeing how things go. If we find a forum gets too large, or performance is a problem, I may have to revisit these numbers. It's just a matter of experimentation right now.
