Taken from the media release:

Cadbury Dairy Milk in New Zealand returns to Cocoa Butter only recipe

Cadbury New Zealand today announced it is responding to consumers by returning Cadbury Dairy Milk to a recipe containing only cocoa butter.

The move follows hundreds of letters and emails in which consumers told the company they didn’t approve of a new recipe where a small proportion of the cocoa butter was replaced with vegetable fat, including palm oil.

Cadbury New Zealand Managing Director, Matthew Oldham, said the decision to go back to using only cocoa butter in Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate was in direct response to consumer feedback.

“At the time, we genuinely believed we were making the right decision, for the right reasons. But we got it wrong. Now we’re putting things right as soon as we possibly can, and hope Kiwis will forgive us. Cadbury Dairy Milk's quality is what’s made it one of New Zealand's most trusted brands for many years. Changing the recipe put that trust at risk and I am really sorry.”

Mr Oldham said that Cadbury remains committed to its product quality and environmental and ethical sourcing commitments.

“Cadbury is a responsible business and we purchase certified sustainable palm oil – one of the few companies in New Zealand to do so. But Kiwi consumers have told us they don’t want palm oil in their Cadbury Dairy Milk, so it’s going.” he said.

Production will begin within a few weeks and Cadbury Dairy Milk will shortly, once again, contain only cocoa butter. The wholesale price of Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate will not be affected as a result of this decision.

We had a protest group going, groups on facebook, even an apparance at the Jaffa race (little orange chocolates like M&Ms but round) down the world's tallest street in a bid to stop Cadbury New Zealand from including Palm Oil in their chocolate, and today they reversed their decision!

We are very happy about this. Palm oil is extremely damaging in indonesia as it destroys the habitats of orangutans to make room for the palm oil fields. Plus it made the new chocolate taste gluggy.

In a city that has a cadbury factory in it, it's very reassuring that they're changing it back to what it was.

Palm oil will be listed as Vegetable Oil (or Vegetable Fat) in the ingredients.

Re: Protesting actually works-Cadbury to change recipe of their chocol

They change the recipe in Australia too. The new chocolate is awful and I won't buy Cadburys again unless they change the recipe back here also.

Re: Protesting actually works-Cadbury to change recipe of their chocol

An Australian once told me that Cadbury's tastes better over here in England, they seemed to think that they add something to stop it melting in Australia.

Anybody know if there is any truth to that?

There is, it's the main reason that chocolate tastes different in the US, Australia and Britain - the hotter the climate it will be sold in, the more they have to hydrogenate the fats they use to increase their melting point. British chocolate wouldnt be a viable product in Australia and most of the US unless it was sold chilled.

Re: Protesting actually works-Cadbury to change recipe of their chocol

They probably claim that, but there are several stores near me that have Cadbury Dairy Milk, Maltesers, Kit-Kats, etc., all imported from the UK. I guess it's possible that they ship them chilled, but the store sections in which they're displayed aren't.

The Bay Area can get pretty warm, though I suppose most stores are air conditioned.

I suppose it also considers things like people carrying them into work, or in their pocket, having them in cupboards in non-air conditioned buildings, etc. They have to put some thought into the climate - when we (occasionally) have some hot weather here, you can find that chocolate in shops becomes mushy and sometimes actually just a viscous liquid. Air conditioning is rarer here, you see.

I'd say that it's virtually* non-existent, except in cars.

:D

* Insert Your Example Of AirCon Here, Brits!

If Hershey bars are a good indication of what passes for chocolate in the US, i'd imagine this must come as a great relief :p

Tried a Chocolate Orange over in the US - Thanks, but no thanks. I'll stick to the UK version:)

The Hershey kisses seemed to go quickly enough when anyone brought them back though:)

Re: Protesting actually works-Cadbury to change recipe of their chocol

^ I passed a standard Hershey bar around work here and everyone agreed that it tasted faintly of vomit.

Re: Protesting actually works-Cadbury to change recipe of their chocol

Glad I didn't try the bar then.

There were a few names I recognized when I visited the Hershey place (Pennsylvania if I remember rightly) but I didn't try much there.

Re: Protesting actually works-Cadbury to change recipe of their chocol

I exchanged some chocolate with and friend from the US, he got Verkade (=Dutch) cchocolate and he sent a few Hershey bars back.. lets say that I wasn't really impressed by them, its kinda like faintly chocolate like powder pressed into a semi bar shaped form....

That exact same comparison was made by three seperate groups of people with whom I hang out when Hersheys first appeared over her. Nasty stuff.
