Protect Yourself.....

I'm all for the "run away while/if you have the chance" side of the argument. I've always been told by the members of my family who have weapons permits (and trust me, they do carry a firearm pretty much everywhere), that if the opportunity presents itself, get away. Even if you are armed, that's your best bet. You never want to have to use what ever weapon you're carrying, knife, gun, garden clippers, etc. And, if god forbid you have to use a weapoin in self defense, never attempt to wound the attacker. Aim to kill. None of that "shoot 'em in the knee" bullshit. Aim for the torso or head. If a knife is your only option, then if you're forced to use it, as stated before, go for vital areas like veins, and tendons. Get away and call the police. Seems like common sense to me...

Or, you could just try your darnedest not to get into situations like that in the first place. If you're in an unfamiliar area, or one you know to be 'hostile', travel in groups.

The whole Escape Plan philosophy is tough on manliness; certain of us, myself included, would definitely prefer to - if there is any option whatsoever - avoid allowing someone (particularly a nemisis) see us fleeing for our fragile and endangered lives. Nevertheless, I fall into the camp of folks who agree; play it safe. Your proud and powerful tax dollars are supporting the police department; that is your revenge.

If you are wandering around in an unfamiliar city, or a potentially inhospitable area, there is also nothing wrong with loading up on pepper spray. It doesn't require experience to use, and it is a non-harmful agent that will generally stop roudies and crooks. Yes, it has a stereotype of being carried in women's purses, but that doesn't change the fact that it is a useful defense product for anyone to use.

My personal tip, however, is to act with confidence wherever you are. If a criminal is looking for a target, as I see it he is going to jump at someone who seems slightly disoriented, nervous, slow-moving or distracted. If you act alert, comfortable with your surroundings, and appear to know where you are going, the criminal might just look for a less stable target. Never exhibit fear; sharks of all breeds can smell it.

Actually, the crying baby thing is true. We had a guy arrested near our apartment complex. Many of us had heard baby cries in our parking lot very early in the morning, about 3 AM or so. When we looked outside there was no one with a baby around, but there was a man standing near his vehicle, with no one else in sight.

J.

I use to hear baby crying outside my window at night but it turned out to be cats.
