Proof Hollywood has run out of ideas

Well you never know, nobody thought making a film based on a Disnet theme park ride would be any good

Quoted for truth, although I kinda liked the second one where I thought it was all set up for a cracking third...in hindsight though it was the same mess the 3rd one was. Shame as I love the first one.

Hollywood is a provider they give people more of what they want. if the public didn't like remakes and franchises then hollywood wouldn't make them.

Exactly.

Here's what I see....when Hollywood does something new or different, and it doesn't have lot's of 'splosions or action...people don't go and see it regardless of how good the writing. Then when these movies end up winning at the Oscars, people are bitching that some mainstream pablum lost to some artsy fartsy bullshit that only the snobby critics liked.

Really, it's just that Hollywood isn't making specific movies that some people want.
They're making what sells.

Also as a film buff, I will repeat the point that remakes are not new. No newer than the amount of threads proclaiming that Hollywood has run out of ideas. The three different versions of The Maltese Falcon (yes Satan Met A Lady is a remake of it) occurred exactly six years apart. 1931, 1936, 1942.

What it boils down to is this: "When Hollywood makes sequels, remakes, and adaptations I'm not interested in it's evidence that they're creatively bankrupt. But when they make sequels, remakes, and adaptations that I am interested in, well, that's just great and they should continue to do so."

^ The sequels were shit, though ...

Yeah, I know a lot of people feel this way, but I love all three of them. I would go as far as saying that At World's End is my favorite.

That's okay, Emh. To help balance out the world, I don't like any of the Pirates films.

Also, a certain black and white Steven Spielberg drama. You know the one I mean. :p

Cop shows and lawyer shows and doctor shows draw in viewers so that's what the networks keep churning out. They do try with other types of shows, but people don't watch them and they get canceled.
Plenty of cop/lawyer/doctor shows get cancelled - it's just part of the overall high churn rate of TV. But nobody around here cares when some generic cop show gets the axe, compared with something original and interesting that stands out in a mob.

Cop/lawyer/doctor shows are at saturation levels. You'd think Hollywood would try something different in the hopes of grabbing an audience that is hungry, not satiated. How many cop shows can a person watch in one week, anyway?

Our only hope is for more original shows and films (like Avatar)
Oy! We can hope for better than Avatar in originality can't we? Magic Whitey Saves the Noble Savage - we've seen that story a few times before, right? :D

They're making a movie version of Monopoly.

Monopoly.
Ah but here are two other "insane" ideas they've tried:

Pirates of the Caribbean - What, a movie based on a theme park ride??? They have completely lost it!

Gladiator - That stuff went out of fashion in the early 60s! [Cue the joke from Airplane.]

But old films remake or not, are good. Most of the updates today are a waste and ruin the spirit of the original. Look at the dumb ass GI Joe Rise of Cobra.

^ Often but not always true. I'd take the 80's Thing over the 50's original any day.

Was GI Joe a remake?

Or the pathetic GI Joe cartoon that it sprang from. With the tiny action figures. Whatever happened to the big Joe? Now that's reality, that's the source material as far as I know...
