Prometheus: Ridley Scott returns to Sci-Fi

Trailers mean little. If they did, Phantom Menace would be one of the greatest movies of all time.

No shit Sherlock. Should we all just stop discussing this until the movie premieres?

A trailer has been released. It is being discussed as a trailer. Trailers can be qualitatively assessed. Deal with it. ;)

EDIT: Holy crap, the Quicktime 1080p version is incredible. http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/fox/prometheus/
Now *THIS* is a teaser. This puts the Hobbit and TDKR teasers to shame.

The Hugh Jackman movie Real Steel (Oct. 2011) had multiple trailers released.
Check out the differences in the international trailer for a different feel of a different type of movie.

May 2011 US trailer length: 2:30

a much more violent trailer aimed at adults.

It's funny how different countries market the movie with foreign trailers.

I'm confused. I thought this was not a prequel to Alien, but a standalone scifi movie.
What's confusing about that?

That the trailer makes it look like a prequel to Alien.

It's a very very thin line Ridley is walking on.

Prometheus is trying to be it's own movie but weaves in "Alien" elements

I think by the end of the movie it becomes a full blown prequel.

There's this image from the trailer

and a space jockey

Then there's a ship that looks alot like the derelict from the first movie

I mean, it's quite possible, I suppose, for this to only be a prequel in that it happens before "Alien" without it actually having anything to do with the Alien story from the original movie. Same setting, but completely unrelated events.

You know, I just now noticed that the "space jockey" isn't actually in that chair in the trailer...so it's either a different ship of the same design, a different compartment of the same ship or that shot is a flashback. My money is on the first option. Different ship, different planet, same origin.

Wow, this trailer looks amazing! This has been a fantastic week for trailers. I can't wait. :D

LOL.
Yes.
After all check out these great no-to-be-released movies' trailers:
Star Wars : Romantic Comedy of the Year

Brokeback to the Future

Pulp Fiction Romantic Comedy Trailer

WILLY WONKA - Recut Horror Trailer

fight club recut
Where's Holdfast? Let us not forget the Mary Poppins Horror Film!

Yep... It is either the same derelict ship on the same world as in "Alien" - Or they find a similar ship on another world.

BTW, do you see the creature standing over to the right in that screenshot from the trailer? (by the 'S') Not human...
EDIT: here is a better screenshot: http://i468.photobucket.com/albums/rr48/bullitt411/prometheus.jpg
Yeah, I do! That's creepy as fuck!

Holy hell! That's just the perfect trailer for this thing! How many more awesome films do we have to look forward to next year? Pretty much gonna have to list the theater as a second residence, myself. :D

They're refraining from calling it a prequel simply because the "Alien," or xenomorph is not in the film and has nothing to do with it. If they went around calling the film a prequel to "Alien," everyone would be expecting xenomorphs. So yes, it does take place in the "Alien" universe, does involve much of what we've seen before, but it is merely a story set in that world. It has nothing to do with "aliens."

Hence, from a marketing standpoint, you can see why they're not running around yelling out prequel to everyone.

Quite right. Just imagine the "public outrage" if they did advertise it as a Alien prequel and it didn't feature any xenomorphs.

Well I have a feeling the studio will start pushing the Alien connection heavily at some point. Just because they won't be able to help themselves.

I think they'll probably do a "public education" sort of thing eventually...playing up the connection, but also pointing out there aren't any Aliens.

Something along the lines of "Ridley Scott returns to the world he created, but this time they've found something worse than aliens..." Something like that, but less stupid.

But then, maybe I'm giving the studios too much credit.
