So any XB1 users here? They released the tech specs of the upcoming XB1 upgrade known as Project Scorpio and while they are impressive, the likely price point is NOT going to close the huge sales gap the PS4 is currently enjoying IMO.

Anyone looking at getting one of these? are you upgrading from your XB1/XB1 S or has Scorpio convinced you to get your 1st taste of Microsoft this generation? Personally I won't get one as I don't like the idea of these hybrid upgrades/new consoles, the last generation with slims n elites were fine but I don't like the shift towards what they do with Smartphones (I keep my phone for several years).

Memory: 12GB GDDR5 (326GB/s bandwidth)
Hard Drive: 1TB 2.5-inch
Optical Drive: 4K UHD Blu-ray
Other key details include an integrated power supply and HDMI Out (no Kinect port, like the Xbox One S).

Based on these specs, those “most powerful console ever” claims aren’t far wrong. Practically, the CPU is 30% faster, the GPU 460% more powerful and memory 4GB larger than the Xbox One. It also tops the PS4 Pro across the board (apart from hard drive which it matches). This will, of course, lead to a higher price tag; EuroGamer predicts it will launch at around $499, comparable to the Xbox One on release

I would guess £450 in the UK though VAT could push it high as £479.99, simply too high after only releasing the slim not long ago and the console itself in 2013. The PS4 has sold around 54 million units against the 27 million the X Box One has sold. Microsoft did screw the launch up with the attempt to DRM their system, the initial online only crap, Kinect bundled and the price point. Looking at this Microsoft have failed to understand the price issue and while it may help the XB1 edge sales in the USA for 2017, globally I can't see this new version of the XB1 helping them gain much ground. How many people have a 4K TV? or will get one in the next 24 months and still be able to buy a console? Will casuals even want to upgrade? will some consumers be confused like they were with the Wii U compared to the Wii?

We have a much cheaper PS4/PS4 Pro on the market and Nintendo Switch, so apart from a small hardcore fanbase, will anyone buy this? I think I will wait for a clean generation gap that I think will arrive in 2020/2021. I am more than content with my PS4, XB1 and PC.

Also I think they could keep the project name and call it "X Box One - Scorpio"

We have a much cheaper PS4/PS4 Pro on the market and Nintendo Switch, so apart from a small hardcore fanbase, will anyone buy this? I think I will wait for a clean generation gap that I think will arrive in 2020/2021. I am more than content with my PS4, XB1 and PC.

I'll likely pick one up. Been really happy with how the Xbox One has evolved so far. To the point, that my PS4 is in my oldest son's room now.

I'm definitely going to pick one up*. I actually prefer the Xbox One over the PS4, but the main stumbling block is how frigging long it takes to install games. Hopefully with the Scorpio, that problem will be remedied. My only concern is that the Scorpio will be held back by the One, since the games are supposed to be playable on both systems.

I'm not a gamer, but my son is and got a PS4 when it came out. We put in a bigger hard drive and it's still his main console. He picked up an XBox more recently, when the price came down.

I suppose he'll get the updates of both eventually, when his old ones wear out or the new ones get cheaper. Unless there is another generation of brand new consoles announced...

It's a hardware revision, basically. Existing games should play better, and you can play in 4K resolution. It will not have any exclusives, so it sounds like the main reason(s) to upgrade would be you want better performance out of your Xbone games, and/or you want to play them in 4K, otherwise there's not much reason to trade up. If the price differential isn't bad between it and the vanilla model, then it might be worth it to go with Scorpio for your first Xbone.

Me, I didn't even own a 360. My most recent doorstop console is a Wii. I'm either gaming on a portable or a PC.

Yeap, i will trade my xb1 in for the Scorpio, especially now they confirmed all your 360/xb1 games that work on the present xb1 will work on the Scorpio, cracking news, i only got 30 digital games left on my 360 library and all my content will have moved to the xb1/scorp.
Plus if you don't have 4k tv MS have stated all games will be mandated to downsampling to 1080p, so you are going to get a even better picture either way, MS doing it right this time, should be a very good system.

Well there has been chatter about this being the last generation of consoles, as any further upgrades will make them virtually indistinguishable from pc'c in all but the box.

I don't buy the generations going away argument and from the sounds of it Sony don't either and gamer publishers would be very unhappy as it would really screw up game production. People will NOT buy consoles like phones and in my opinion anyone who upgrades their phones yearly are a fool with too much money and not enough sense.

I think the current model is the way to go for the foreseeable future...

I expect PS5 & XBox to launch in 2020 or 2021 + Nintendo will most likely make a Switch 2 in 2022/2023.

My gut tells me the PS5 and XBox (some weird name), will use Hybrid SSD drives so the software runs of the SSD part to allow the console to turn on almost instantly and it would make app launching really quick too but games would remain on a HDD until the Pro versions come out several years later. They will be at 16gb DDR5 Ram, 4k on launch and still have 8 cores set up but of course faster (maybe around 3.0ghz).

I can see the next generation being backwards compatible with current gen games...
Pop in a PS4 game in a PS5 and play it with the same enhancements at it would get now on a PS4 Pro(boost mode)...

I agree.. at some point the console architecture will need a complete redesign and it will not be enough to just plug in better parts. So in a few years we will most likely hear about the next generation that will offer even better graphics, features and whatnot.

Fortunately consoles don't follow the smartphone lifecycles where nothing substantial has happened for years, just a tad better display, camera and power consumption. No need to buy them every year.. every 2-3 years is more than enough.
