Previous Hater: I just drank the Kool-Aid!

I was a "Hawaiian Punch" kid, myself, watching those TOS reruns in the early 70s.

Last Thursday, my mind was so wrapped around the idea of time continuity that I failed to capture the moral of this story. Abrams wanted to illustrate the power of friendship: how two people that can’t be any more different and don't get along at first, can become best friends.

Good man. Spread the word.

Joe, reaching

Is 'the word' still legs?

;)

Sorry, on topic. I have to echo some. How much more 'in your face' did JJ have to get to spell out that this is an alternate timelime? It is literally discussed on screen.

For some of these people, it would have had to be the subtitle to the goddamned film: "Star Trek: New Alternate Timeline."

I fear, that for some, that still might not have been good enough.

I think a big reason they even bothered with the alternate universe stuff is to appease the hardcore fans who didn't want to see Trek completely wiped out. So I find it hilariously ironic that a segment of the very people he was consciously throwing a bone to are ready to string him up for it.

Ingrates.

orry[,] 'm too tired to pro[of] read my posts and not rn a spell checker or grammar checker [on] it.
o just dismiss my opinions because did not follow proper essay format.

[M]aybe should [have] written this in [K]lingon, but that would be too elitist[,] wouldnt it?

Really? You don't proof read? Imagine our shock... ;)

......and that whole device that its an alternate universe just seems like a cop out to me. like it just a dream plot line. And what urks me is that now the main universe is gonna be in this newly created one, and the old verse will never come back. Yeah sure they did throw a couple of bones to the fans, but those are not enough consistering that they just told all the old fans that all the time you spent watching the series doesnt matter anymore.

All the other trek incarnations all tryed to fit into the trek verse, and then comes abrams with his audiacity to blow everything up.

Ding ding ding!

We have a winner, folks!

:techman:

Bingo. But it isn't really audacity. He just doesn't give a f', and that is probably because Paramount told him not to. He was told to make money, and he will. He doesn't really care about anything else. His main goal wasn't to make Star Trek fans happy anyway. It was to get other people to come to the movie, and come back to the sequals. And he's probably done that.

Personally, I'm sad because I think he could have accomplished those goals without flushing all existing Trek down the toilet, but that would have taken a lot more hard work and cleverness. This was the easiest way to do it. You make a complete break from Trek knowing that most people just don't care enough to worry about it. You also know that those people pissed off about it are so hardcore that they will probably buy tickets anyway, which is all that really matters to Paramount.

At least I understand now why Paramount shut down the Star Trek experience in Vegas now. None of it jived with the new Trek universe, so it had to go.

He doesn’t know why, but after watching the film, he went on to order the original series on blu ray! I was shocked and said he was crazy. He said he was hooked on the characters and was intent on learning more about how these characters developed.

This doesn't make sense. If Fake Trek is an alternative timeline then watching Star Trek will not show the development of the characters in Fake Trek. If they are in different timelines then they are different people and have different back stories.

You can't watch Star Trek and learn about Fake Trek. You can't watch Fake Trek and learn about Star Trek. It isn't logical.

Alternate timelines are fun to go into occasionally but should not be focused on. I would only consider Fake Trek an alternative timeline if, through the content of the movie, it is obviously clear to the average viewer that it is an alternative timeline.

There should be no mistaking the Fake Trek timeline for the Star trek timeline.

I here-by demand that the term "drink the Kool-Aid" being used for people who like something be removed from our lexicon.

Over the years, I've seen every Star Trek episode on TV. I've never bought a book or a dvd, or been to a convention, but I consider myself a fan.

I didn't read a thing about the movie before seeing it. I wasn't even aware that a new trek movie was coming out until I saw it referrenced on some message board.

Man o man was I impressed. That first scene on the Kelvin was more than any fan could hope for, worth the price of admission alone.

The applause at the audience gave at the end of the movie means that the franchise I've followed for years will live on for a long, long time.

This is something that really gets on my nerves. It's "would have", or even "would've", not "would of". How the hell is that preposition supposed to make sense next to a verb that's yelling for a finite verb? Subjunctive clause, people.
Irks me a bit too, but, hey! it's a board that anyone from all over the world can post on and you people will need to accept that most of us are at best trying to get by with what little Engrish we know!
Primal Directive?
I wonder if that's what they are calling it now? :p
