It's both. Trite and gritty, or rather trite grittiness. It would be a better film without the beautiful people, and if it was less saccahrine, but it still could be a helluva lot worse. As I bloviated elsewhere, the strong point is the daughter and the mother and all of their bitterness; the weak link is the frowningly concerned and improbably gorgeous-looking teacher.It isn't remotely trite; it's an extremely gritty film. I'd recommend it.I don't think I'm going to bother to see Precious, based on its appearances of being a trite melodrama.
