Pre-order "Star Trek" at iTunes (plus Extras)

Thanks to Mrs Whatsit's tip, it looks like Star Trek is available for pre-order on iTunes.

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewMovie?id=317909453&s=143441

It is available for $14.95 and apparently has "extras" which is a new feature on iTunes which allows you to get the extras like a DVD.

***********

Apple is apparently using Star Trek material to promote the new Ipod 3G and iTunes 9. Nothing huge, but cool advertising none the less.

Possible ad tie-ins coming?

Re: "Star Trek" on Ipod Page

Thank you, Devon, you just made me one happy camper! After I looked at that link, I went to iTunes and saw the movie is available for pre-order ($14.99, release date 11/17), so I pre-ordered it. I just have to be careful not to do anything stupid that would break my iPod between now and November...

Re: "Star Trek" on Ipod Page

Hmm, noticed that. It's on the front page of ITunes. Apparently will be part of iTunes new "Extras" program which you can get extras with the digital copy.

Wah, hah hah hah!!!:wah: I don't own a large enough portable for iTunes, I can't download the movie and watch it anywhere! Boo hoo!
...Sniff, snifle...

"Star Trek" download from iTunes

A Paramount spokesperson originally told Ars that the iTunes Extras content was exclusive only to iTunes.

However, Ars discovered the content isn't all exclusive after all. Project Manager Clint Ecker, being the Star Trek fan that he is, took the plunge and downloaded the entire 7.3GB HD package from iTunes. The two featurettes included in iTunes Extras aren't, in fact, exclusive—a fact that we were able to later confirm with the Paramount spokesperson.
They are on both the two-disc DVD and three-disc Blu-ray versions.

Unless you've abandoned optical media altogether (and remember, the discs come with a downloadable digital copy), buying a physical copy just makes more sense.

There is a "secret code that unlocks additional content" in iTunes Extras—but it only gives you additional poster art.

To give you an idea of the value proposition of buying Star Trek via the iTunes Store, the SD download costs $14.99 and the HD download (at 720p) will run you an additional $5.
...buying Star Trek on iTunes just isn't that great a value.

I'm currently locked in a customer service back-and-forth with Apple because I paid for the HD version (stupid me), and now I can't even download the file that makes it HD. I keep getting an error message after a short attempt--one that I looked up and is very common and apparently unresolvable for 99.9% of the population, if my Google search is any indication. Apple, of course, insists it's my Internet connection or my PC (of course, I was able to download the (non-HD) movie file and extras portion of my purchase with no problem. I tried every fix they suggested and everything I looked up online with no luck downloading the HD file, so I'm now trying to get them to refund that extra $5. We'll see what happens.

Please, learn from my mistake--stay away from the iTunes HD.

Mrs_Whatsit wow sorry to hear this!
Personally I can't agree with paying to download a 720p HD file.
If it is not 1080p then I know I'm not getting the best quality resolution in a digital file that I'm paying for when I know the film was mastered at 2K (2048x1080 pixels) for the digital cinema release according to DCI spec. Thinking down the road you may wish to play this on an HDTV and it could look better than 720p.
Blu-ray is good for the home theater but what about portable devices? One of these days some sort of license has to happen for you be able to have both. Oh wait, the Bluray of Star Trek (2009) already offers that for $24. but the "digital version" is only standard def. but then again what is the screen resolution of the iPhone & iPod touch?
480-by-320-pixel display resolution at 163 ppi which is below standard definition video which is 640x480 resolution at its minimum.

Even another personal media player that is selling feature films very similar to the iTunes store Microsoft's Zune HD has screen resolution is 480x272 and you can purchase 1080p video downloads but it is just wasted storage space when you are viewing a 2.35:1 original aspect ratio film.
