Powering up devices.

Anyone notice that anymore in lots of movies and TV shows whenever someone powers up an electronic device it makes that increasing high pitched tone like a camera flash warming up?

It's called a sound effect. Has nothing to do with reality.

(Actually its a SFX holdover from the OLD days - pre 1960s - when stuff had tubes and DID make sounds while warming up...)

Indeed I have. I also make that sound when I wake up.

My computer made that noise all the time, but then I replaced the case fan with one that worked properly. :p

The new power up sound is part of the "go green" initiative. The thought is that if it hurts your ears to turn on an electrical device, then you probably won't turn it on as often (and thus save the planet).

^ See that's why I keep my PC on 24/7/365. It's also why when I turn on my PS3, I don't turn it off until I got to bed. ;)

have you ever powered up a quantum slipstream generator? how about a class 3 A.I. console?

You remember firing up the ol'286, that humming/clicking/whining the hard drive would make when booting up? I still hear that when a state-o-the-art PC in TV series is started.

I blame Ghostbusters.

"Why worry? Each one of us is carrying an unlicensed particle accelerator on his back."

Actually I'm more annoyed by the fact that nobody ever uses a computer mouse, or that whenever someone rewinds a recording you always hear a squeaky reverse FF audio sound. Jeez, its a digital recording, not a damn reel-to-reel deck!

How about when someone opens a cell phone and gets a dial tone? Or when someone is hung-up on a land-line phone it clicks over to a dial tone?

None of which happen in real life.

Or when the are doing computer video chat and it's not only smoother than HDTV, it's full frame to boot. Damn, those people must have some freaking awesome bandwidth at their disposal!

All shows should now be perfectly realistic. I want to watch Friends with them wasting the 30 minutes bitching about work and watching tv. I want to watch House where House calls sick and goes down the stree to the Deli for 30 minutes.

Oh, and Jack Bauer kills a half hour in the can - after all, he has a little time to kill before the bad guys get through traffic to attack their next target.

My phone actually does click over to dial tone, but it takes a moment.

That power-up sound is just too much associated in my mind with the night-vision switching in in the Splinter Cell games

Just how is it the bad guys never see those three green glowing circles when you're hiding in the shadows?
