Man, with that kind of money, I'd fund where I work for several years. They'd get upgrades they'd need... The teachers could all have excellent healthcare benefits. The kids would have all that they need to play.
My dad would have immediate homecare for my mom or if necessary, put her in a top-tier nursing home.
ETA: I'd buy a better car for myself and I'd be fully independent. I'd keep things fairly quiet if I could. I'd honestly take the annuity so I could stay grounded.
Further ETA: I can't see myself giving up my job. But I can see myself making things better for my friends, the people I have been working alongside.
 
I've played the last 3 drawings. I don't have so much money that I can play every drawing, but throw some money away when it's $100M plus.

$496M gets cut in half by taxes. I'm young enough I would go for the 29 year/30 payment annuity. No sense in giving away another 40% if you don't have to I figure.

That would be almost $27M per year before taxes.

Peach Wookie, with that kind of money, you could move your mom into the White House.
 
I hate when it gets ridiculously high and news stories focus on people who claim they have the key to winning it all! Where were these geniuses when it was at $40 Million? :vulcan: :rommie:

Inflation will eat away the savings you think you're getting. If it were 30 equal 27 million payments the final payment will be worth about 12 million once you get it. Then factoring in that lump sum can be converted into an interest bearing asset and the ever present uncertainties over future circumstances, I'd say always take the lump sum.

Not that it's a problem any of us will ever have. I'd be more worried about how to claim it anonymously anyway.
 
In my state, you really can't. And I crunched the numbers... taking the annuity, you'd end up with $483,200,000.07. Well invested, you could end up with $800,000,000.
 
Yep, I read an article once that laid out the best route to take. The lump sum will always be worth more in the long run.

Me, with half a billion dollars, I'd start my own space program! (Not really)

I would of course, set myself up with some nice toys, houses, and all my friends/family would be taken care of.

Then I would take a lot of time to find a way to put that money to work. Preferably on a company involved in transformative technology. I'm a big fan of Elon Musk's companies. He manages to start companies that are industry disruptive and profitable at the same time. Fighting for the future while making money.

Don't forget Benford's law---From the wiki:
