Do you have a favorite?
I recently heard two by the Scorpions that are great

I want this one played at my memorial when the time comes.

and this one

(the acustic version is great too)

It is often said that this was the very first power ballad:

:sigh: sorry... :(

Jim Steinman's magnum opus:

[yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_cnPVAkGA8[/yt]

I understand that this was the first official version of the song, performed by Steinman's own group. I actually remember this version of the song, which was not a commercial hit at the time.

According to the group's press release, it was claimed that vocallist Elaine Caswell collapsed 5 times during the recording of this song. The power of Steinman compelled her.

When I first started to notice and pay attention to music, this was one of the bands playing on the radio. Not sure if that was a good or bad thing though.

The other master of the power ballad was Diane Warren.

I'm a huge fan of 80s hair metal, so I love the power ballads. I could go with the popular ones like Home Sweet Home, I Remember You, Home Sweet Home, Every Rose Has Its Thorn, along with a ton of stuff by Van Hagar, but I won't.

Steelheart - All Your Love

Dream Theater - Another Day

Ozzy Osbourne - Mama I'm Coming Home

KISS - Forever

I don't know about the "power" part, but she definitely was the queen of the ballad writing.

Chicago even used a song or two of hers in the early 90's. I didn't like Chicago using that type of song very much, but whatever.

Meat Loaf is my drug of choice in this department:

Some of my old favorites:

When I think of 'power ballads', I think of hair bands popular in the late 80's. In light of that definition:

1. Sweet Child 'O Mine - Guns n Roses:

Okay...now that Axel is out of the way, I can get down to real business with Bon Jovi. Because in the late 80's, these guys were KINGS of the power ballads, not at all incidentally because every woman alive in the late 80's (and many to this day) had a massive crush on Jon Bon Jovi! Don't believe me? Just watch the female fans in this videos.

2. I'll Be There For You - Bon Jovi :

3. Never Say Goodbye - Bon Jovi:

4. Born to Be My Baby - Bon Jovi:

5. Livin' on a Prayer - Bon Jovi:

Getting the idea? Because I could post 4 more, no problem. Yep...no band has mastered the art of the power ballad better than Bon Jovi. :techman:

Yep, I was only 13 at the end of the '80s but I vividly remember almost every girl I knew being in love with Jon Bon Jovi. Then at some point girls started pining over candyasses like NKOTB.

Well, I was older - in my 20's when these songs came out. Plus, I was always much more of a rock fan than a pop fan. So I was never into NKOTB, Backstreet Boys, or any of those boy bands. Much too squeaky clean for my taste. GAH!

No....if I recall correctly, I think that I went pretty much straight from Jon Bon Jovi to Eddie Vedder. Where I guess you could say I've remained ever since. (Ever see this one? Cus I've had boyfriends who could completely relate:

teehee!)

Although I have to say...as rock stars go, Jon Bon Jovi has aged incredibly well. Much better than most rock stars do. While I was rooting around in Bon Jovi videos earlier this evening, looking for a sampling of their power ballads, I happened upon the video for Lost Highway, which I had never seen (came out only 3-4 years ago). And I have to tell ya...Jon Bon Jovi is looking just fine.

When it comes to that song, I love the Meatloaf version:

Speaking of Meatloaf, does this qualify as "Power Ballad"?
