My friend and I watched all three, ALL THREE, of th LOTR movies today. It was an all day event because he had the longer versions. I liked them, still think they went on too long at times, but when you watch them at home (and can pause for bathroom breaks) they actually hold up.

For the next two weekends we will be watching the Potter series. I have only seen the first two Potter movies, having to give up on the rest for various real life reasons.

I really liked the LOTR movies. But many of my friends prefer the POTTER series..which did you find more entertaining?

Lord of the Rings. The only two Harry Potter movies I really enjoy are the 3rd and 4th ones. Prisoner of Azkaban is in my top 10 films. I don't really care for the others because I think the books are light years ahead of the films. Well... I'll be honest. I don't like the first two books that much, but Order of the Phoenix movie is about 10% as good as the outstanding novel.

Potter.

I think LOTR are all good films (really, I do) but what re-watchability do they have? What do you get out of a second or third viewing? I haven't found much of anything.

The Potter films, by contrast, are fun to re-watch bits of here and there from time to time since they're actually meant to be, you know, entertaining.

The family tends to put on a Potter movie when we can't figure out what else to watch.

I prefer the LOTR movies, particularly the FOTR.

Lord of the Rings, because i'm an adult. I stopped reading childrens books and watching childrens films a long time ago.

Books- LOTR. It's a literary classic, and Tolkien's writing kicks seven shades of shit out of JKR's (who is fine enough, but not in Tolkien's league)

Movies- A tougher call, because both series are gorgeous. LOTR wins out, however, because it has one vision behind it - the same director and crew for the whole series, while Potter has a more variable set of helmsmen.

And yet some of them are OK. A rare breed, but there are some (especially in terms of classic stories which weren't written especially children, but have simply become classed as childrens' books after the fact)

LOTR is far superior to Potter. Better story, better action. Potter doesnt fascinate me. A bunch of school kids running around doing magic? BORING! Massive battles against orcs? YEAH BABY!!!!!

If you enjoy commentaries, quite a bit. I must have watched each extended film five times to get all the commentary goodness out of them. And they did bring to light certain decisions made by the cast and crew that went over my head the first time.

Commentaries aside, LOTR is just as rewatchable as any other film IMHO and YMMV.

Lord of the Rings for adults without even a contest.

Fans of LotR should read or listen to the unabridged versions of:

The Silmarillion - Sets up Middle Earth
The Hobbit, and then the three LotR books.

Ha ha, you're being ironic, right?

Or did you really just brag about ditching childrens' books for one about a bunch of fairy-tale creatures on a quest?

Heretic! BURN!

How dare you compare the utter genius that is LOTR with the dreck that is HP? You fail at geekdom.

I wasnt bragging about anything, i was stating a fact. I dont read childrens books or watch childrens films because i am not a child. They dont appeal to me. Nor do i play with childrens toys nor watch childrens television. If you still enjoy doing so then good for you.

The Rings films did a far superior job of interpreting their original novels. The Harry Potter films, while well executed, well cast and acted, and so forth, cut a lot out.

The Harry Potter films are good fun.

The Lord of the Rings movies are my all-time favorites.

LOTR is in a league of its own, IMHO.

The Harry Potter films are fun and all that--I certainly enjoy them--but, like 1001001 said above, they aren't even in the same league with the LOTR films.

It's not even a contest, IMO.

I guess the millions of children who've read the LOTR books over the years weren't children?

Do you plan on going to see the Hobbit movie or is that too "kiddy" for you?

While the first Potter book is definitely geared towards people of a younger age, the subsequent books and movie very often deal with mature themes. I'm not sure what having young lead roles has anything to do with it. It's not the Teletubbies.

Arrogance. You sound like one of those people who thinks video games with blood are "mature". Then again, you probably don't play video games at all because you're too mature.

LOTR in a heartbeat. No contest here, IMO.

Twenty or thirty years from now -- we'll still be discussing aspects of LOTR and the world of Middle-Earth. No one will even remember 'Harry Potter'...

Cheers,
