*Potential Spoilers* What will the Alternate Enterprise-A look like

^ Thats why. It just doesn't look as nice as the blue. I thought I'd play around with the colours in STO and it doesn't look right at all.
I'll agree to disagree. Making the caps blue in addition to all the other blue glowy elements on the ship (deflector, nacelle fins, extraneous glowing bits on the saucer) washes it out and makes it very monochromatic. Make the deflector more gold with more subtle blue glow and red-orange nacelle caps and I'm happy.

Let us assume that in Star Trek 2009, the United Federation of Planets commissioned a new class of ship - the Constitution class (laid down around 2254, finished around 2258). Let us assume that two first two were USS Constitution NCC-1700 and USS Enterprise NCC-1701. The Enterprise embarked on it's first five-year-mission two years later at the end of Into Darkness (in 2260). Star Trek Beyond takes place three years later (in 2263), and at some point prior to this, the warp nacelles were upgraded to a smaller design, probably during a months-long refit at a major starbase.

So the timeline of the Kelvin Enterprise looks like this:
- 2254: Possible date her keel was laid down

- 2258: Shakedown trials / Nero's attack on Vulcan / Placed under Kirk's command

- 2260: Deep space mission to Nibiru / Marcus's attack on Kronos / First five year mission under James T. Kirk begins

- 2262: Possible date of first major refit

- 2263: She is lost at planet Altamid, three years into her five year mission

Compare this to the original Enterprise, which was probably something like this:

- 2242: Possible date her keel was laid down

- 2245: First five year mission, under Captain Robert April

- 2251: Second five year mission, under Captain Christopher Pike

- 2256: Third five year mission, under Captain Christopher Pike

- 2262: Major refit

- 2264: Enterprise passed to James T. Kirk

- 2265: Fourth five year mission, under Captain James T. Kirk

- 2266: Major refit

- 2270: Major refit

- 2273: Fifth five year mission, under Captain James T. Kirk

- 2278: Becomes academy training ship

- 2285: Battle of Mutara Nebula, later lost at the Genesis Planet

I look forward to seeing how the Enterprise A, which in the Kelvin timeline, has been given to Kirk about 23 years earlier than in the original timeline, will fare as a ship - hopefully we will see a good few five year missions of deep space exploration out of her.

I'm just gonna leave this here. For reasons..../

Any idea how long it took to build the new ship? Was it built specifically as a replacement for Kirk? I guess the crew just kicked back until the new ship was done? I'm going to see the movie today so I'll probably have the answers before anyone replies to this. :)

At the beginning of the movie there is a mention of a new more advanced ship build at the starbase, so she was already under construction. It was named or renamed to Enterprise at a later point obviously. no indication how much time the rest of the construcion really took.

Even though you'll see the film before the reply...

No real timeline given for the build - but it wasn't directly built for Kirk. It's mentioned early on that there's a new ship under construction at Yorktown thats a while off being finished

Edit: Beaten to it, saw the above after I very slowly typed :(

Did anyone notice what seemed like 9 decks in the neck of the ship?

This is going to kick off size discussions again, because that seems similar to TOS proportions ;)

So,

2258:
- USS Enterprise is launched
- Saves Earth from Nero

2259:
- Ship is wrecked by the USS Vengeance

2260:
- Repairs, new impulse engine, and nacelles finished.
- Goes off on first five year mission

2261-2262:
Further motifications done during five year mission
- Swept back nacelle struts
- Smaller nacelles
- Thinner neck
- New phaser array
- Renovated bridge and other interiors
- New uniforms

2263:
- Ship is destroyed on Altamid

2263/2264?:
- USS Enterprise A is launched

I thought it was interesting that the bottom of the saucer had the registry number on it and maybe even, oddly, the name too.

That was started in Voyager though. In Timeless and forward when you saw ships other than Voyager of Federation design they usually also had a name below the ventral registry.

The best example I can think of was the Challenger.

I was onlooking closely and have a few observations/opinions.
1. From the deck spacing in the saucer dorsal compared to JJpirse, the ship seems a little smaller (fewer decks).
2. The bridge module looks to be directly inspired from the Prime-A.
3. I think they are leaving the option open for a non-window bridge, and for it to be moved back up (to it's proper location)
4. Overall, it's a much more balanced and proportional design, and I 80% like it - More than the JJprise.

My biggest personal issue is the nacelles.to pylon ratio. The pylons seems to be too far towards the front of the nacelle. They look to be in the same general area as the JJprise, but the larger front bussard collectors and lower scoops overall balanced that out..

Nope. It can be taken that the ship underwent modifications between the two movies as it definitely did.

There is mention earlier in the film that a new advanced starship is currently under construction at Yorktown. Presumably this became the Ent-A.

Edit: didn't see that I was beaten to the punch thrice!

It makes sense to strengthen the Pylons, especially with the way the Enterprise was torn apart at the start. The smaller nacelles are most definitely welcome.

Unless they release a proper look at it, we wont get a decent look at it until the forth film.

Or QMx makes a replica. In which case I will be knocking over the local bank for 6k.......
