Portal 2

Wasted a whole day playing yesterday. It's addictive. Still fun. I can't think of any game that hooks me so completely.

Is there a difficulty setting? How hard is the game?
No difficulty setting. If you've played Portal then you know. Deceptively simple mechanics give way to fiendishly difficult puzzles later on. But always fairly simple to do once you work it out.

Just watching a playthrough I found myself hooked. Its one of the few games where the storyline is just as good as the gameplay. You're sure to find yourself standing around between levels just looking and listening to the dialogue.

It even inspired me to make a wallpaper (1440 x 900).

Don't look unless you've finished the game though. Its Spoilerish.

I played Portal about a year ago and thought it was pretty difficult. There were quite a few rooms where I had to watch the video walkthrough over and over before I could finally manage to do it myself.

Haven't needed to cheat yet. We had a go at the split screen co-op play today. What a laugh. The number of times I squished him accidentally was epic. The games are completely different and genuinely need two people. What a brilliant purchase.

Never needed to do that on Portal or Portal 2, but a couple of times I was stuck for ages trying to work it out.

I think there's no need to wait for the end of the year, Portal 2 is my game of the year.

I loved it so much. Some of the best and funniest writing in a game ever.

I especially loved the Cave Johnson recordings, this one in particular (very minor spoilers).

I got this on Thursday. I've been playing it on and off in order not to rush through it, but just completed it. Fantastic game, better than the original and that is one hell of an achievement.

I must admit that the negative user reviews made me kinda wary, and the first hour of the game didn't help as I found myself going through the same chambers from Portal 1 that I had just played the week before. And Wheatley annoyed me. But from the moment that GLaDOS showed up, I fell in love with the game, especially all the fat jokes. By the end, I had even grown to find Wheatley funny, which I was astonished by.

The only thing missing is the advanced chambers from Portal 1, I would have loved to spend some more hours trying to get my head around those. But I guess there's always co-op, which I haven't delved into yet.

If you had difficulty with Portal 1 then you'll have even more difficulty with Portal 2. Portal 1 only had a small number of gameplay mechanics; portals, buttons, flying energy balls, turrets... I think that's it. Portal 2 has that stuff (except the flying energy balls) plus lasers, light bridges, tractor beams, jump plates and 3 different types of gel. And in the later sections of the game, many of these things must be used in conjunction with one another and timed just right. On the plus side, once you complete a test chamber you get to feel really smart for a couple of seconds. ;)

^ This is why I'm not getting this game. I got stuck about 2/3rds of the way through the first one.

But in honor of the new release, I decided to reload the first one and give it another shot. We'll see.

I guess that it all depends on how well you can get your head around the portal concept. I've always been good at spacial relations so I took to it well, but others must find it more difficult. Also, since the puzzles usually only have one sequence in which they can work, once you find the beginning of the sequence the rest of it will usually come together.

My favourite chamber was this one (the video is in Spanish, so it shouldn't be too spoilerific, in case you do decide to play it some day), I spent about 5 minutes in that room looking for a button before realising that I was the button.

^Yeah I spent ages trying to solve that one and even longer later on trying to figure out how to smash the screen for the achievement. That took some doing and even then I'm not sure if my method wasn't technically cheating.

That's interesting, because I've always been terrible at spatial relations, I can't understand the most basic principles of descriptive geometry and I certainly can't "see" anything in 3d, and I had absolutely no problem with Portal 1 and 2.

I got the game! It's fun and the dialogue is great, but I was very disappointed when Stephen Merchant went away so quickly. I'm up to the start of Chapter Three the Return.

Just be patient. He'll be back. Besides, you've got J.K. Simmons to keep you company until then. :techman:

Wheatley comes back.....and he's funny. I'm still laughing at the 'Life giving you lemons' quote from Cave Johnson though.

I got stuck in the first one a lot as well. In fact, I forget if I ever bothered to win it? But this one I never had to look at a cheat sheet for at all.
