Popularity of Trek Literature

Didn't they recently release a couple of new Space: 1999 novels? How long has that been off the air?

But clearly Star Trek must be doomed forever!

But those Space: 1999 books were released by a tiny niche publisher set up, by fans of the series, to publish Space: 1999 books -- although they did eventually branch out and publish a couple of Prisoner titles. I have most of their 1999 titles, but I haven't gotten beyond the flicking-through phase in trying to read any of them. In other words, they haven't WOWed me yet (which may be more a comment on my ambivalence towards Space: 1999 than the quality of the books -- no offense to any of the Powys Media authors!)

So, if/when Pocket Books decides to stop publishing Star Trek books, it's very probable that some smaller, less prestigious entity will take over the license and put out some new Trek titles. But I'd rather stick with the professionalism and quality of Pocket's product, rather than take chances on some fan-driven publishing collective run out of somebody's garage...

If anyone requires an example of a TV series that was off the air but continually supported by an ongoing line of original tie-in fiction from a major publisher(s), look no further than Doctor Who.
