Seems like they would have featured it on X-Files if not for the unsavory sexual angle.............



POPO BAWA

"Of the many inventions of east Africa both technological, literary and mythic, certainly one of the most colorful is 'Popo Bawa': the Ass-raping ghoul of Zanzabar.
In its natural state Popo Bawa is a small bat-like creature, but when hunting human victims---it is revealed to a 'shape-shifter' that takes human form to ass-rape or 'sodomize' its unfortunate prey.
Since the first sightings in the late 1960s there have been numerous sightings all across east Africa that have caused mass panic. To avoid nocturnal ass-rapings, villagers across east Africa and the nearby off-shore islands have taken to staying awake all night and huddling around camp-fires to ward off Popo Bawa.
There have been few sightings in recent years and inhabitants of the region have speculated (and hoped) that Popo Bawa has contracted and possibly died of AIDS, due to the fact that it would be incapable of obtaining the drugs needed to slow the disease. Others believe that Popo Bawa is indeed alive and has raided various hospitals and pharmacies to obtain said drugs.
What is known for sure, is that all fear the eventual re-appearance of the dread Popo Bawa."

There is a nice article about it in the October 08 issue of Fortean Times.

Strangely it has some political overtones, like vote for Candidate X or PB comes a callin'.

Also it has a pattern of striking people who actively don't believe in it.

It usually commands you to tell others about it during an attack to spread it's name.

I think it's more likely to be an 'excuse' for bisexual males in the region: "No, I didn't, I NEVER would do something like that, do you think I'm GAY? -it clearly was POPO BAWA"

Google it-----it's a hoot.

In one article a lady is quoted, "It took so long (the rape), over an hour. I finally passed out!"

She passed out AFTER AN HOUR!! Wow, she's a pretty tough lady. I can just imagine her husband listening to her tell the story.........

"okay, okay it took an hour, don't rub it in----I'M only a man, he's Popo Bawa!!!"
