Poll on the Recent Casting News

Great idea, OphaClyde. Abrams has employed nonlinear storytelling with great success before. The film will probably have some nonlinear features.

I just think it's really funny that one of the things people've always said worked so well about TOS was the chemistry between Kirk/Spock/Bones, yet they seem to be casting from a "he sorta looks like him" perspective.

Quinto's also got plenty of interpersonal chemistry, you can see it on Heroes where he actually managed to help an otherwise dull and useless character played by a marginally talented albeit very pretty actor (Mohinder) become interesting. I used to think they should just kill Mo off, but after he started getting scenes with Sylar, my opinion of him did a 180. So that bodes well for his scenes with whoever they get to play Kirk.

They didn't just hire Quinto for his looks, yknow. How many times do you see an actor who makes other actors around him look better than they actually are? That's what they mean when they talk about "chemistry." Get a Kirk who has even a moderate ability to reciprocate and I think they'll really have something.

Oh, and Spock is much harder to cast than Kirk.

I'd say they're both hard but Kirk is going to be harder. The actor chosen will have to re-invent Kirk to a much greater extent than Quinto has to re-invent Spock. Shatner's borderline-hilarious mannerisms will be off limits to the new guy - he'll need to come up with a different way of "projecting" Kirk that nevertheless seems right. Sounds very difficult to me.

I'm hoping this movie will focus more on Kirk and Spock, with the other regulars appearing briefly via flash-forward to whet our appetites for Trek XII. ;)

I think there are a few more plusses to hiring Quinto. By this time next year, Heroes will have completed another season, and I think his star-power will be even higher. If you're looking to bring new viewers to Star Trek, it doesn't hurt to pull from another popular place. Look who they picked for Hiro's dad. I'm sure that brought a handful of Star Trek fans over.

I'm hoping this as well. The 'regular' bridge crew shouldn't actually be together until the final scene where Kirk tells Sulu to set a course and the ship goes to warp as "Space... the Final Frontier" is recited by Nimoy (or young Kirk, I guess).

In a slight tangent, I'm going to say the Nimoy-Spock portions will take place in 2385. Six years since NEM in real life, so why not six years later in the 24th Century scenes?

Additionally, 2385 is 100 years after TWOK is supposed to be set. A nice tip of the hat whether it's intentional or coincidental.

Seems logical to me. Plus, Spock being about 140 yrs. old (?) will probably fit with how old he looks in real life.

I voted "Other" but it could also have been "Before the ensemble". Trek XI could be a reboot similar to the way Daniel Craig grew to become James Bond in Casino Royale.

If that's the case, we'll see a young Kirk assembling the ensemble in order to face off against the villain/threat. If I had my way, Pike would transfer Enterprise to Kirk right at the end of the movie, marking the beginning of the 5 year mission. And we'ld get to hear the newly captained Kirk say "Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages..." right at the end of the movie.
