This came up in another thread and while it's not my idea the other poster didn't mind if I do a poll so here goes.

It's pretty simple. Do you like Janeway and are you male or female?

No, there's not an option for those who don't care one way or the other. It's not that we don't care about you - we're just not interested right now. ;)

You should add "and are you straight/gay?" There are going to be guys who hate the idea of a female in command. And then there are those who are like me ... gay, and love the idea of a woman Captain generally, but don't like Janeway specifically.

Me, I think she should have been locked in whatever Starfleet uses as a prison the second she got back, not hailed as a hero and given a promotion. Starfleet really does let people fail upwards.

But if you do that then you have to account for lesbians also and then you might as well break it down to avtive feminists etc. I think it's best left as is. I'm straight male and I like Janeway as a captain.

I was ready to vote that I don't like Janeway, but some of my favorite voyager related literature is featuring Janeway very heavily, just not in combination with the rest of the Voyager cast (i.E. the flashback parts of Mosaic and Fire Ship in case you're wondering), so I'm not sure if I dislike the character or just the character in combination with the series' setting.

Except in rare instances (Ex Machina, primarily), I find Janeway to be a much more interesting character than Kirk, and she's clearly more interesting than Archer. I personally prefer Picard and Sisko, as captains go, but Janeway is solidly in the middle. I enjoyed tremendously some of her more badass / powerful episodes on Voyager and most of her featured appearances in Treklit also, including her controversial portrayal in Before Dishonor. The only time I haven't liked the character was in Golden's Relaunch novels; I felt she was far too bubbly and joyous, and not intense or interesting enough.

Oh, and I'm male.

Hmm, that is a dilemma! :)

I'm double-ex and I loved Janway at the start of Voy. (I gave up watching Voy for reasons of life getting in the way). I'd say the reason I kept watching it as long as I did was for the fact it had a woman captain.

I couldn't stand Janeway, and I'm a woman.

I felt like they did a much better job portraying a woman with great responsibility with Kira Nerys, and I would much sooner read about Kira in command than watch Janeway. I felt like Janeway was arbitrary in her decision-making and that's what gave me a bad impression of her. One minute she'd be all for principle and the next all for expediency. Some consistency would've been nice in that regard.

I like Janeway fine, but I'm getting sick of TrekLit threads about Janeway.

I'm starting to agree with this sentiment because one or two threads over time is one th ing but thread after thread is kind of pushing it, I mean I don't have a problem with people expressing their opinions on the issue but at this point it comes off as beating people over the head with it.

I never really liked her, even when I still watched Voyager. I can't really pinpoint why. I guess one reason would be the inconsistency Nerys Ghemor mentioned. And she didn't seem to be that good a captain compared to Picard. But I like Archer, although he's not that great a captain, either, and a bit crazy. Unlike him, Janeway came off as quite self-righteous and taking herself way too seriously, and that's probably what I dislike the most.
I'm a straight woman, by the way.

Unfortunately I couldn't vote because you didn't tell me which Janeway I'd be voting for.

  • By the book Janeway
  • Insane Janeway
  • Schizophrenic Janeway
  • Timeline destroying Janeway

I'd pick yes if we're talking about the early seasons Janeway character. Not so much with the later versions.

So don't post in the thread you're not interested in. It's that simple. :p
