I'm finally seeing Alien 3 Director's Cut for the first time. I'm halfway through it... and it's still boring :p

:rommie:

If either version of the movie had been as good as its musical score (the end credits theme is particularly awesome), then I could see Alien 3 being mentioned in the same breath as its two predecessors. As it stands, though.... no way.

I'd just like to put in a word for the things in AR that were actually good. The cast, as has been mentioned before, were mostly very professional and very talented. I leave aside the principals on the research ship because their their actions were, to coin Bob's description of Prometheus, stupidtastic.

Alien Ripley was excellent. Creepy, superhuman and wisecracker with an underlying profound hurt is not easy to do but she made it look effortless. The aliens underwater was a brilliant idea. The crew of the Betty were really well put together, aside from some dodgy scripting decisions. With a bit of intelligence at the helm it could have been a pretty good film.

The other problem with Alien3 is that watching it immediately after Aliens... I just feel like this is a completely different character in Ripley. Yeah she was tough in Aliens and everything but she's downright predatory in A3. She's like the ultimate alpha male, bossing everyone around, looking all tough with her chin jutted out and her shaved head, walking up to the doc and saying hey let's screw.... it was very jarring.

Ripley is a different character in every single movie. It doesn't help that each movie feels so different.

Just finished Resurrection, and that was was better than I remembered. I actually quite enjoyed watching it! Maybe because I had just seen 3 :p But it moves fast, the characters are fun, it looks great, there's good action scenes. My only complaint is I still think the White Alien looks stupid and slow and mechanical, and not half as good as the proper Aliens. It also walks a good line between comedy and drama; Alien 3 was so damn morose!

Impossible to choose between the first two on the merits because the films are trying to accomplish different goals (horror/action) and they both are successful in doing so. (IMO, smart of Cameron not to try to replicate the suspense/reveal of Alien)

Aliens wins the nod though, because it is so quotable...

"I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit, it's the only way to be sure" is one of my favourites from Aliens.

The first one has become my favorite, but the first two are both genre classics with styles distinctly their own, yet still clearly part of the big picture of this 'verse. I enjoy the third far more than most seem to. The 4th...parts work...parts most definitely don't, but I do find myself putting it in the DVD player every now and then.

Going from one alien in the first one, then going to a plethora in the second, then back to one??? Then killing off everyone else from the second movie was assinine. Then we get Ripley turned into a bald space farm tool and we are supposed to care???

It helps that in one case it isn't the original Ripley.
