Let's summarize.

8) The earliest Janeway could come back is mid 2010; the earliest this would be announced would be late 2009. So this debate could go on a while.

I think that's what I've gotten out of this thread; did I miss anything?

The only thing I would add is that if it were announced that Janeway will be resurrected, those in the "dealbreaker" group would then go out and buy Full Circle, Unworthy and any novels leading up to her resurrection, knowing what a good story line this seems to be. However, those who feel Janeway's death best served the story, and the Trek universe, may not buy a book in which she is resurrected, and become disgusted with the Voyager series. At that point, the resurrection may become the "dealbreaker" even if the story is worth it. :wtf:

It's hard to assume what those fans would do. Personally, I think it would be a mixed bag. Some may feel they won't want to give it a chance (and if they're the ones saying those of us not currently interested should be giving the series a chance that would be really ironic) but others may just be willing to go with it. After all, characters come back all the time in sci fi.

Just like some people that don't like Janeway's death are also just willing to go with it.

I feel like it's pretty much the same situation either way, it's just a question of relative numbers. Relative numbers we have no way of determining.

That's pretty much what I was trying to say but you got it down in fewer sentances. ;)

I guess I won't be quitting my day job as a software developer to write the "great American novel" anytime soon!

I can tell you that if they bring back Janeway in a way that I find acceptable and if they don't screw up any of the other main characters of the series before that, I may buy and read "Full Circle", "Unworthy" and the books leading up to her resurrection.

It seems to come down to whether you have trust and faith in Pocket's editors and writers, and in the CBS vetting process. Overall, I'm very trusting and they rarely let me down. Every so often - but not for ages - a novel comes along that I feel is sub par, and I find myself wondering how it made it through the process, or if it was fast-tracked due to deadline issues and didn't get the full editing job it needed.

But even "Warped", "The Laertian Gamble" and "Into the Nexus" have their fans, and someone out there is always bound to say, "That was my favourite ST novel of all time."

There are other ST fans who are not so trusting of "The Powers That Be", or who even believe that TPTB are vindictive towards the fans. And those fans are going to have a hard time enjoying any ST novel.

And there are many fans of science fiction media series and movies who don't read much of anything, enjoying their shows because they are a visual medium and don't require a high level of reading skills. They will have little interest in tie-in novels, and some will be highly critical of a line they can't engage with readily.

And there are thousands of other permutations, because "the fans" are all individuals, and we cannot even attempt to speak for them all with confidence.

That's true, we're like a cup of water compared to the whole of trek fandom. Fill a cup with water from the sea - no fish in it according to the sample you took there are no fish in the ocean...by the same tone, we don't really know how the majority of people feel about Janeway's death...

To further summarize, 40 people say they don't care how bad the story is, they just want Janeway in it.

Not exactly. No where does it state that 'Yes - I don't care how' is equal to 'I don't care if it's a good story'.

To me it means that I don't give a shit if it ties in with the current direction of the books or makes sense in this regard, and so I don't care what the specific storyline is, but yes I bloody hell want a good story. That goes without saying. ;)

Now what a good story is...that's an entirely different matter and something I think we could debate until the moon turns purple.

^ Well, Gorf, I think if someone answers the question "Should Janeway be brought back?" with "Yes - I don't care how," that does at least imply that the quality of the story isn't the first consideration. Isn't that what "I don't care how" means?

Perhaps that's an error in the poll as it was created, though goodness knows it's not easy to write these things, but I do think picking the first option does imply that bringing Janeway is more important than the story that does the job. That's how I interpreted it, anyway. That's why I personally answered "Yes - as long as it makes sense for the story."

Ronny's exaggerated somewhat, though.

I interpreted it as being more demanding. I want Janeway back and I want it done in a good story. No pressure.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Half the ppl who posted in this topic?

No, I'd say most of them, too, want compelling, risky, interesting stories, and would be the first to complain if their heroic Janeway featured in a totally blah, safe, innocuous novel.

They just don't want it to be Janeway or a VOY regular who has the fatal injury or life-changing experience.
