Poll: Bring Janeway back?

Should Janeway be brought back?

Let's summarize.

1) Almost no one hated Janeway as a character so badly that they got a visceral thrill from seeing her die; thankfully, recently, no one has seemed to assume that either, so we made some progress that way.

2) The realities of the publishing industry, regardless of anything else, dictate that the permanence of Janeway's death is up in the air, and will be until/unless she's resurrected.

3) In my opinion, and several others, the exploration of the mortality of the main characters of an adventure series like this is a crucial and exciting aspect of the storytelling, making Janeway's death a positive and constructive element of the universe. This is based primarily on Full Circle's treatment, not on the event itself in Before Dishonor.

4) In many other peoples' opinions, the universe is not the same without the characters they love so much, and death of the main characters is antithetical to Star Trek's message of optimism to the point where Janeway's death is a dealbreaker. Alternately, Janeway herself has an enormous and exclusive following, for which Janeway's death is obviously a dealbreaker as well.

5) A lot of the 4s don't seem to understand the 3s, and vice versa.

6) Most people probably have an opinion somewhere in between 3 and 4, but don't care enough to post about it, though for what it's worth (very little), this messageboard seems to trend slightly toward the 3s, as evidenced by this poll.

7) There may or may not be an enormous wealth of other fans that don't post here that would overwhelm the results of that poll. As a result, Full Circle may sell extremely well (if this messageboard or the amazon.com reviews are indicators of most fans' opinions) or sell extremely poorly (if that enormous wealth of other fans are indicators of most fans' opinions). Either way, Pocket won't know for a while (and Unworthy wouldn't change either way), and we won't ever know, because Pocket doesn't release sales numbers.

8) The earliest Janeway could come back is mid 2010; the earliest this would be announced would be late 2009. So this debate could go on a while.

I think that's what I've gotten out of this thread; did I miss anything?

Sounds about right,

I would add that some people are basing their opinions (on both sides) on hearsay rather than their own experience of reading the books, which I personally don't think is on, but thats just my opinion

Also I don't think the poll is quite fair, there should be an option of "not right now" for people who wouldn't mind a story of her returning (in whatever way) down the line...

if they bring her back, i'm going back to only reading New Frontier.
I've bought Full Circle to see what comes of her death. I think it's the first Voyager book I've ever picked up, so it's worked in getting me interested in the series.
But That said New Frontier is still about the only series that gets me excited for a new release, and has me wanting to get right to reading it. As much as I loved DS9, I just can't get excited about the books.

to summarize furhter: 115 people say no. 103 people say 'yes', but over 60 of them only say yes if the story's worth it.

To further summarize, 40 people say they don't care how bad the story is, they just want Janeway in it. I think Austin Torney has found a niche market...

Well then at least the new New Frontier book is coming out.

I don't see how. But then again, as I've discovered in this thread, I most certainly don't see everything. No, really, it's a very fair summary.

By the way, I don't want to bum anybody out, but long, long, long ago, when someone expressed glee at the idea of one of the Janeway threads (can't remember which one) finally coming to an end when it reached the 1,000-post mark, the mod said something along the lines of "Nope, that's not how it works." My recollection is that the mod said there is no hard-and-fast rule that a thread always ends after 1,000 posts. It often happens that way, but it doesn't have to. I think the mod said this partly because the glee wasn't stated in, let us say, a very tactful way, but that's what was said. So...don't bet the farm, at least not yet.

The main reason was because the new board software can handle threads larger than 1,000 posts.

^ I am but the reporter here, not the policy maker.

I wonder if it matters how long the posts are? Because we've got some doozies!

Edit: By the way, when I said "long, long, long ago," I meant, like, a month or two. It just seems longer.
