Police Squad! reboot

Please, for the love of all that's holy, tell me this is a joke... :barf: Linky

BAD thing: I do not want Seth fucking MacFarlane anywhere NEAR a Police Squad reboot
I don't want fucking ANYBODY anywhere NEAR a Police Squad reboot! I don't want THE WORD "reboot" anywhere near the title Police Squad! It is on my DO NOT FUCKING TOUCH, EVER list, and I want it to stay there!

The Naked Gun movies were funny, but I can't say I'd want to see more of them. I hated the way they turned Frank Drebin into a bumbling idiot. The humor was too over-the-top and blatantly slapstick.

I much preferred the original Police Squad! TV series, and how they played it straight. At least there, Drebin was a decent guy who was good at his job. If the reboot sticks to that formula, I'd be interested. I definitely don't see Neeson playing the idiot Drebin from the films...

If you listen to the DVD commentary track for the sixth, and final, episode, ZAZ actually say they were relieved that ABC pulled the plug because they felt that they were running out of ideas and that there was no way to sustain the premise over the course of a full season.

Also, haven't they been trying to do a 'Police Squad'/'Naked Gun' movie for a while now?

I thought at one point Ed Helms was supposed to play Frank Drebin Jr.

IMHO, that's what made them so good. A man who tries to play it straight while chaos plays around him everywhere he goes is comedy gold. Plus Leslie Neilsen was a legend. But they were so much a product of the 80's. Comedy stylings have changed and new comedies aren't quite as clever as they once were, as far as slapstick style goes anyway. The Naked Gun movies are fun because of the writing.

Do studios even know how to make parodies anymore? The Jason Friedberg-Aaron Seltzer duo, among the worst filmmakers working today, drove the genre into the ground by making movies that weren't even parodies. They made reference movies. Remember that awesome Coca-Cola commercial? Well here's a reference to it. Did you like Hunger Games? Here's a reference to it.

Even before that, the Loaded Weapon movie always struck me as pointless, parodying the Lethal Weapon series, at a time when that franchise had already started putting its tongue well into its cheek. And of course LW3 was way funnier than National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon. Airplane and Police Squad worked because, in addition to having lots of very funny jokes and actors with great comedy chops, they parodied entire genres, rather than individual movies.

I love this news. MacFarlane is someone I trust to do this right. It might not have the same feel as the old ones but I expect it to be just as funny. Plus it's better than the last time someone talked about bringing this back. Does anyone recall a few years ago their was talk about rebooting it but doing it as a serious cop movie and not a comedy or spoof. It might have been the dumbest reboot idea I saw or at least tied with the idea of killing Andy Sipowicz for that NYPD Blue reboot.

It works to a certain extent, but... to have a whole series of movies done like that felt like they didn't understand the fundamentals of parody. I'm of the opinion that comedies in general have gotten worse over the years. The good writing is replaced with gimmicks strung together that eventually devolve into toilet humor, and toilet humor is so embarrassing and cringeworthy and almost never makes a movie better.

This is why you can trust MacFarlande. He might do some toilet humor but he also knows how to do all sorts of comedy.
