Thank you, Vash, for your kind comments and in particular for your donation to a worthy cause! :)

It is my privilege -- as I've always said -- to do this thread. My belief is that whatever one does to help out, out of a sense of generosity, always comes back tenfold and in unexpected ways. It's what some people consider positive karma. :) And it can come back to you in ways large and small. Strange things that some may consider coincidental have recently begun happening -- I've been given more than my share of things when purchasing food, for example, by mistake of the clerk selling me the item. Once is no big deal, but three times, and in widely separated locations, in the space of just two weeks?

Soon, I will donate more and will be add to my own total, and I hope others will consider doing so if they can.

We are some of the most generous people on the Internet -- all of us, of all nationalities. I know this from not just this thread, but others, as well, on this Board, through the years. In some sense, the donations in this thread merely serve to confirm what I have known.

Live long and prosper! :)

I donated something like $98. I know its a weird number but I was aiming for £50. I also donate monthly to Oxfam so i imagine some of it will be heading there.
I hope to donate again after my next paycheck.
Also the head of the company I work for has personally pledged £100,000 and has also arranged for £1,000,000 worth of clothing to be sent.

I just donated another £2.50 by the Mobile Phone companies' appeal - send the word "DONATE" to 864233 (Orange UK customers only).

Enty, you've got me in there twice, by the way; once for $19 and once for $5.

OXFAM GB have reached their target and stopped collecting specifically for the Tsunami, which is excellent news.

A few of the other Oxfams in other countries are still owrking otwards their targets though, so it should be still possible to donate via them if you wish.

Reflects additional contribution by Kurn! :) I've also consolidated Kurn's listing.

Most cool. And thanks to Huntingdon for his information!

It's all about the donations! :D

And a welcome to our newest donor, AdAstra and mother. :)

I've donated 31 euros...
And my mother a further 60 euros, both to the Tsunami 12-12 effort, which is the (temporary) Belgian Consortium of Charities, consisting of Caritas International, Handicap International, Oxfam Solidarity, the Red Cross and Unicef.

And I'm already a regular blood donor, giving as much as I can :-)

Also, the Belgium national tv stations are holding their (mutual) fundraiser show. All the efforts of the previous weeks have gathered over 27 million euros so far :D
Their goal is well above that, but the show hasn't been going on for very long, so we'll see what happens :)

Can you add another $82 to my total please... It appears that more money has been collected at my school!

Done and done! :)

I'm quite busy right now -- too busy to check any other Forum, but never too busy to check this one!

It's all about the donations! :D

Just contributed another $20.00. :)

the whole idea of charity is giving freely, not after someone asks you to give. Not for people to get together talking about how much they gave.

This is true, however people also like organisation. It's all very well saying "People should donate of their own free will" but the question is always, how, and to whom? That's why threads like this are good; they give people an idea of where to aim their generosity.

This kind of thread also highlights those who are giving, especially those who give as much as they can; people like to know that they're not the *only* ones giving, otherwise it seems like a helpless cause.

Anonymity? That's an idea.

So what do you think about all those organizations that come to your door at dinner time looking for donations? :)

The total keeps going up! :D Excellent!

Hodge, I respect your viewpoint. But I tend to agree with Kurn that this is a good way of keeping the issue alive. Thanks for your input!

When they come to my door, I give as needed, but I don't call my neighbor to trade stats on our alms. :p
seriously though, i do think giving is a healthy practice and i am pleased to see so many involved. i hate to be negative about this matter

The anonymity feature helps considerably to diminish the concerns you raise, I think.

We do agree that the involvement of so many is wonderful. :)

Fair.

Truth be told, when someone comes to my door looking for money, I almost NEVER give it to them. It's not because I don't support certain chairities, it's because--like you implied--I'd like to think I'm doing good by my own acumen. I choose the charity because it's something I believe in.

But I don't think it's wrong to boast/take pride about your donations publically--look at EVERY Company/Network/Website/etc., asking for donations. It may not be on an individual, person-to-person level, but they all mention how much money they garnered in donations. Even schools are doing it: rasing money to reach a certain goal, and letting all know about it via the nwespapers, whatever. Individually it's no different, in my opinion, and it encourages people to support; to take pride in meeting a cerain goal.

$0.03

Add that to my total, Enterpriser ;)
