This is a plea from one Trek fan to another -- to each of you reading this, personally:

Please, if you can, donate funds earmarked for relief for the South Asian tsunami catastrophe to a charity you trust. The amount need not be large. It can be anything you can afford: $5.00, $10.00, $20.00, or above.

I personally donated some funds for relief of this disaster to http://www.worldvision.org, but you can choose any reputable charity at all. I intend to donate more funds over time.

I would like to see how many of us have donated to help our brothers and sisters around the world in their hour of need. If you desire, please note your donation here. Feel free to add your comments, as well.

Thank you, and God bless you.

I gave the money my mother gave me for Xmas which was $AUS60 to the Red Cross Tsunami Appeal. I will however have to lie to my mother about what I did to my money as my mother is rather racist (actually extremely racist) and wouldn't like to know that the money went to help Asians.

Thank you for donating!

I am most saddened to learn that your mother is very racist. There is nothing so horrible as the dismissal of the lives of individuals simply because they happen to be born to a race different from one's own.

All innocent human beings are equal in the eyes of God, and in the eyes of those discerning enough to understand the world at large.

I'm not going to post how much I gave. Any donation is valuable. It's up to your conscience to decide how much you should donate.

Nonetheless, I've donated to the Oxfam appeal and I'm a regular monthly supporter of theirs too. They've added a further update to www.oxfam.co.uk saying what they're doing and what aid they've dispatched.

I've donated some money to the Red Cross for the tsunami victims (more than $30). I'm also a member of Save The Children and I'm sure they'll be sending out an appeal soon, so I'll see what I can get together for them.

Done. Worldvision's website isn't responding right now...hopefully due to lots of people trying to log on and donate funds.

I was lazy and made my donation through Amazon, in which 100% of the donation goes to the American Red Cross.

That's not lazy; it's efficient. I did the same thing.

I noticed that on Amazon's site today. :D

I donated as much as I could this week. I want to get some more together after paying for Christmas and my other bills.

Ooops...too early in the morning for me. I meant I was ordering stuff on Amazon and made a donation there after placing my order--you know, one-stop shopping for the lazy. :)

I was in the > $30 category in the poll above, BTW. I have relatives in Thailand, but I don't personally know anyone affected by this, thankfully. I feel like I got kicked in the gut each and everytime I hear about an increase in the death toll though. :(

You and me both. One of my staff comes from Thailand and her family still lives there; luckily, it turns out her family lives far north of the effected area. Too bad everybody else wasn't so lucky.

Thanks to everyone for donating, once again.

I just made another donation, and plan to do so again over time. This donation was made to http://www.care.org.

I hope and pray that those folks who have family and friends in the affected region receive good news about their welfare.

Again, if you can, please help in any way possible. Please contribute to private and public relief efforts and spread the word to do what you can. Let's show the world how much we care!

I donated this morning through Amazon. Their collection is already up to 2 mil so far. Please keep donating.

^^Thanks, Blazerboy!

And great to read about the donations through Amazon, too! :)

Keep 'em coming. The death toll has risen to 80,000, and it can only get worse, with the inevitable spread of malaria, cholera, and other water-borne, tropical diseases.

Many of the dead were children. Entire families, entire villages, entire coastlines were annihilated. This is absolutely unbearable.

Let's show the world that the privileged countries of the West are kind and generous not only in their governments, but also in their individual citizens.

This is the holiday season. We all are encouraged to have love and charity in our hearts. How can we live with ourselves if, so near Christmas Day, we turn a blind eye to this unbelievable suffering? This we cannot do!

Thank you all for reading this appeal. I don't do this often, but when the time is right, I want to do what I can.

Please contribute, please spread the good word, and God bless you all!

If everyone in the US donated just a few dollars, think ow much money that would be. Since this clearly would never happen, the government needs to simply send that much, and add a few dollars to everyones taxes

I would like to make a suggestion -

Maybe we could set a target for people on Trekbbs to pledge(maybe $US2000). It doesn't matter which organisation you give to just tell us how much you have given. Someone could do a running total each day. I am certain that we could reach $2000 easily.

Non-Americans could convert the amount of their donations to US dollars at this site

web page

My $AUS60 = $US46.42

Edited to add: If people do not want to publicly announce how much they have given maybe one person can be nominated to tally up such donations on the provision the keep the names on people who contact them a secret.
