Pleasantly Surprising Character Aspects

Mojochi

Vice Admiral
Admiral
For example, I'm sure many of us found Troi's stretch of being thrust into command, in Disaster, pleasantly surprising, but I like to draw attention to her analytical contributions in Darmok. We rarely ever saw her being such a direct influence on a mission as she is there, in her collaboration with Data, on trying to understand this alien culture. It made for good scenes, & it made her seem rather indispensable to the effort, which is pretty rare for her, compared to other characters. I really wish she'd gotten more of that. She'd be darned useful in contact situations, & rarely ever got featured that way, at least in any way that mattered

Also, Worf mentoring Sito Jaxa in Lower Decks. Never really got a chance to see that side of him either. It adds a warmth & sensitivity to the character, & really raised his stock imho

I was always a fan of how Picard would let himself be eroded by children given enough contact and that most of his standoffishness with kids was probably a product of his guilt/fear of them from bringing Jack to Bev and Wes. It was great how he would eventually warm up to basically any kid that crossed his path, even if it was at arm's length.

I think the intention was that he knew he had issues relating to kids, & it was an aspect of himself he wasn't proud of & maybe wanted to improve. He's never disliked kids. At least I've never seen it fully displayed that way. He's just a type of person they sometimes are intimidated by, & having little experience with them, he sometimes has less than ideal initial reactions, & he has had trouble getting through at first.

The Disaster episode is marvelous in showcasing that. His initial responses are completely counterintuitive. He yells "We're Falling!" Which starts them all screaming their heads off. He then barks a command to stop crying, which makes them cry more, & the best he can come up with is to recruit them as little officers. lol but at least that is in some way trying to relate, which finally offers him some success

Even his relating to Rene was weird at first, with the role reversal joke. Wes is just a touchy subject altogether

^ That's actually pretty much what I was thinking with what I said earlier. What I meant by him being eroded by children was that despite being outwardly standoffish with them, he did in fact want to get to know them and let them crack through his insecurities to become their friend, even if the end result wasn't like 'hey omg bffs!' but was more at arm's length. Insecurities that I think are part that he has little experience with them, and part that some of those insecurities are a result of what happened with the Crusher family.

I don't know if it's all Crusher family related though, though I'm sure that had a heavy impact. He's ultimately pretty standoffish with everybody. Even his own family are on the outside. It's only heightened with children, because children are almost always incredibly welcoming, so his whole demeanor is alien to them. Picard's relationship with kids is an amplification of his relationship with everyone, imho

Geordi's command abilities in seaspn 1's "The Arsenal of Freedom".

Not only a standout episode for the season, and the whole cast, but Geordi in particular. He kept a cool head, and didthings in a logical manner. He took advice well, and used his authority when needed, mainly with Logan. He was very encouraging to Solis and Tzu, which helped them win the day. I think this, more than anything else, was why Picard promoted him to Chief Engineer. If there is one department that is the single most important on a ship, it's Engineering. You want to make damn sure you have the right person with the right mindset for the job.

I always thought of him being very private and when he did talk to people he was most interested in interesting people.
For example discussing Astro-physics and music with LT Darren, rather than radishes planted in weird dirt.
My idea of an interesting time at a party, for example would not include listening to a three year old partially mske up a story about they may or may not have ever actually seen.
So I get him perfectly.
Is not discomfort at being around children, it's probably bordom. However, you can't act bored if their parents are anywhere in the vicinity or where you may possibly be viewed by any others.
