Playstation 3 busted wide open.

Some of us are interested in discussing the issue at hand

I've never heard of a blowjob - corporate or otherwise - being described in quite that manner, but whatever, I can roll with it.

Is that all you have to contribute here, chuckles? I haven't actually seen you do anything but troll people.

Contributions you don't like and trolling are, in fact, not actually the same thing. Your desire to see dissenting voices crushed beneath the iron heel of the moderators is perfectly in keeping with your attitude towards the subject at hand, though.

Many thought that was a bullshit choice and set about opening up the PS3 themselves. I don't blame them at all, either. You buy this hardware, it should be yours to do with as you please. Sony shouldn't get to tell you what you can and can't do with it.

Maybe if a certain bunch of dickheads hadn't abused the privilige, Sony wouldn't have felt the need to remove the option for everyone. And no, the hardware shouldn't be yours to do with as you please, if what you please involves copyright infringement or other illegal activities.

I can live without a PS3 that runs Linux, as can everyone. You don't buy a toaster, and then complain that the company who made it wont let you roast a chicken with it.

But if I decide to modify my toaster so that it can roast chicken, is Cuisinart going to send me a cease-and-desist? Of course not.

The OtherOS feature was also advertised on the PS3 box. Taking an advertised feature and unilaterally removing it years after purchase is bait-and-switch, frankly. If Sony has the legal right to remove it, then PS3 owners likewise have the right to modify the system to get that functionality back. The purchaser owns the hardware, not Sony.

I don't disagree that Sony has the right to try to thwart piracy and cheating, but people also want to be able to use their consoles as they see fit, doing things like homebrew and installing other operating systems on it. Yeah, only a tiny minority actually do this stuff, but that doesn't mean it's not a legitimate use of the hardware.

Its inclusion was always an oddity. I think it must've been either Kutaragi's baby or else part of some vague notion of intruding into the PC sphere to in some way counter Microsoft's intrusion into Sony's sphere.

Terrible analogy, since toasters don't come advertised as being able to roast a chicken. Sony advertised the PS3 as being able to run Linux, so yes, I do complain when I buy a product that advertises a certain feature as a key draw and then the manufacturer later cripples that feature by fiat.

Like I said, if the feature hadn't been abused, it would still be there. You know who you can thank for that.

You haven't contributed anything other than posting a thread bomb in reply to a fair point that you disagreed with, and telling me that no-one gives a fuck what I think. When you post an actual opinion about the topic, I'll let you know whether I disagree with it or not.

My attitude towards the subject is simple (even simple enough for you to understand); being able to run Linux on the PS3 was a nice touch by Sony. Unfortunately, that feature was abused by people who wanted to break the law, so Sony removed it. Another example of an idiot minority spoiling it for everyone else.
Now someone has found a way to break the PS3 wide open, which has some great benefits, as pointed out, but also has some massive drawbacks.
Now, if you'll take a moment to jump down from the "Fuck you, Sony" bandwagon, and actually look at this objectively, you'll see why not everyone is jumping for joy about the news.

Having said that, I'm fully expecting you to completely ignore what I've said, and carry on insulting me, seeing as that seems to be all you're capable of.

I don't disagree with any of that, but the fact remains that if Sony felt that the feature was being abused, or if people were using the feature to conduct illegal activities which infringe on Sony's business, are you really surprised that they removed it?

I'm not surprised they removed it. Nor should anyone else be surprised that the community stepped in to put it back. :)

Sorry, bud, but I left the "punish the group for the deeds of individuals" meme behind in grade school.

That argument does not wash.

And I'm not saying I agree with it either. All I'm saying is that's what Sony did, and people shouldn't be surprised.

Just because I don't give a fuck that people can't run Linux on a PS3 anymore, doesn't mean I'm defending Sony, just stating there's a reason for their actions.

Sorry if that makes a few people butthurt.

Read harder.

Gee, and if all you were doing was 'not jumping for joy' by saying, for example, that 'this sucks because it's going to mean more cheaters in-game' instead of taking it on yourself to dictate what others should be able to with their property, maybe we'd never have gone down this road. In fact, you'll notice that haggis made just such a post which went entirely 'untrolled' (as you would describe it) by me.

Having said that, I'm fully expecting you to completely ignore what I've said, and carry on insulting me, seeing as that seems to be all you're capable of.

You're the only one throwing insults here, and a not inconsiderable number of them at that. I'm just swearing at you.

I find that statement insincere, seeing as that's exactly what Haggis said, and you responded with a "worlds smallest violin" picture.

And I didn't dictate anything. I said people's rights to use a piece of hardware as they see fit ends when they use it to break the law. Read harder.

Mentioning Kutaragi reminded me of Sony's initial ambitions to take over the electronic world with Cell. Here's an interesting interview with Kutaragi conducted by Nikkei Electronics magazine re: the processor from 2001 and another from 2005. I still can't get over the fact that he insisted on eight cores simply because he liked the number:

Cell has 8 embedded "SPE" CPU cores. What is the basis for this number?

Because it's a power of two, that's all there is to it. It's an aesthetic. In the world of computers, the power of two is the fundamental principle - there's no other way. Actually, in the course of development, there's this one occasion when we had an all-night, intense discussion in a U.S. hotel. The IBM team proposed to make it six. But my answer was simple - "the power of two." As a result of insisting on this aesthetic, the chip size ended up being 221mm2, which actually was not desirable for manufacturing.

The man really was quite mad.

I also found his response to Napster interesting. Very much an engineer's response rather than a suit's one:

What are your views on the world's confusion to the appearance of such services as Napster?

Kutaragi:It was an innovative event that a Peer-to-Peer software has debuted in the network. But the network became the current tropology when TCP/IP appeared. Going back to the time five years ago, it could have been easy to predict the form of P-to-P. When looking back, it seems that even I could have worked out the model of P-to-P out if I had given a serious thought to the matter during the New Year holidays. It was the negligence of the Japanese networking engineers that they did not come up with the idea. There are too many watchers who criticize other people's technologies and there are too little who really are giving everything a good thought.

Sucks for Sony about the piracy... but I bought my PS3, i should be able to do whatever the F I want with it as long as i'm not "stealing" games. Looking forward to seeing what the homebrew community comes up with.

Servo, you've been told before about accusing people of trolling. You therefore have earned an infraction for trolling.

Switchbk, while you haven't specifically broken any rules you should dial it back too before you do.

If it helps both of you why not utilize the ignore feature of the board and ignore each other?

It looks like Sony wont be going quietly into the night after all with all.

Sony sue hackers

ony’s legal suits are at it again, filing a lawsuit against famed hacker George “Geohot” Hotz and the fail0verflow team. Along with Hotz, it specifically names Hector Martin and Sven Peter, both of whom gave a revealing presentation on Sony’s broken PS3 security last month at 27C3. 100 other individuals have been targeted as well, although they remain unnamed. The suit contests that said defendants are in violation of DMCA under U.S. law, pointing to the recent publication of the PS3′s encryption routines and subsequent release of Hotz’s firmware 3.55 jailbreak.
It seems Sony isn’t letting this slide, not without a fight. More as it breaks
I suppose if your going to hack something its best not to give yourself so much publicity that's your become famous, or should that be infamous.

My idiot brother has installed this on our PS3. Anyone know how I might remove it? I'm worried Sony will block my PSN account!

Is there a "restore" option in the settings somewhere? a la iphone?

If your bro has used JB while signed into the PSN or had the PS3 with a active net connection then you can bet this will have flagged your PS3 to Sony as a JB'ed console....if your bro used JB off line and never had a active connection then you might be ok but i have no idea just what info the PS3 stores while Offline to send to Sony next time it gets a Internet connection.

Now Sony have not yet started banning JB/hacked PS3 yet, but you can bet its coming, so its really a matter of time to see who,why and when it all kicks off.

All i can suggest is the best way to totally remove JB from your system would be a full format of the HDD, a but drastic but if you have had JB on your PS3 and have been offline with it i suggest this would be the best opinion before you connect that PS3 to the net.
