Playmates Toys

I’d hope they’d at least go up and down.

They did mention when they kicked the toy line off that they wanted it to be more “toyetic”.

The bummer thing about the figures is we won’t get a Rok-Tahk to go with the rest of the Prodigy crew.

That’s it, TNG hit the sweet spot of mainstream popularity, especially among kids, that is really required to sustain a successful toy line.

The adult collectors will only get you so far, and they have alternatives. I also think Playmates shot themselves in the foot slightly with the first wave figures - everyone has Kirk, Spock, Picard, Riker and Data already. The quality wasn’t really good enough either - soft likenesses and poor detailing.

I dont think the character selection was bad…although I would have done Bones instead of Khan. Everyone may already have Kirk, Spock, Khan, Picard, Riker and Data. But I think you should still lead off with the most popular characters. Ones that might appeal beyond just the built in fan base.

The article mentions that Target still has interest in the figures. I wonder if there is maybe a chance they could pull a few and do exclusives. Maybe Seven and Q or Geordi and Worf. They do exclusives with Funko and a few others all the time.

Disappointed but not surprised that yet another figure line has failed. A ridiculously long wait between waves is not going to do your line success any favours.

It's not really Playmates thing, but perhaps they should have targeted the 6" collector scene, which seems to be huge right now.

I don't think figure scale is really an issue, it's likely more a case that they're Star Trek figures and no one other than diehard collectors want them, IMO. It just isn't the 1990s anymore. It may be that in the future, any toy company trying to do Star Trek figures--like Hiya is gearing up to do--shouldn't even think about selling them in large numbers at brick & mortar stores and just produce them in small numbers for online stores. Star Trek figures may be so niche now that making them for anyone other than adult collectors may be a lost cause.

Playmates may want to indeed concentrate on just ships and role-play toys going forward...

TBH, I hope Playmates makes a SNW Enterprise. Pike’s ship would make the most sense in my mind because reasons:

1) Hero starship

2) New version of Enterprise starship from new media (reimagined at least) that hasn’t been done as a light n sound toy-leaning product format (yet?)

YMMV

I’d be all for that! My Playmates 09 Enterprise sits ‘pride n joy’ in my collection, amidst all my other DST / AA, and playmates starships.

I would have also loved to see Playmates take on the Bey: Refit and the Bey: Ent-A…

[sighs!]

As long as the blue inner panels in the engine nacelles light up, I'm down! Was so disappointed that the Hallmark SNW Enterprise only had the nacelle thrusters lighting up. I've seen Hallmark light their ornaments much better, so I know they could have done better.
