Playmates Toys

This photo was taken at London Toy Fair earlier this week. It’s pretty blurry, but from what I can see (and intel I’ve had from an insider) I think it’s: TNG Worf, TNG Geordi, SNW Spock, VOY Seven Of Nine, Q in Judges Robes and SNW Pike. What do you think? I think the figures on the right are the already released Kirk and Spock as you can see Spock’s ‘mickey mouse’ radiation gloves in front of them. Picard and Burnham are possibly on the far left. Sadly there aren’t any ships or accessories from what I can see, nor are any of the forthcoming Prodigy releases on display.

Among the characters we had a chance of possibly getting, Pike was the one I wanted the most, so this is exciting.

Judge Q is an interesting one, I never would have predicted that.

A new Troi was my actual #1 wish, but that didn't seem like a realistic thing to actually hope for.

Really I'm just psyched more are in the works at all. I'll buy whatever they're selling.

Looks correct for the guys in the middle, hopefully SNW and not Disco S2 suits for Pike and Spock. Far left three tiered lucite display looks like Kirk on top, Data and someone else in the middle, and Michael and Picard on the bottom. Unfortunately, we can’t see what’s on the shelves underneath, presumably that’s where the Prodigy stuff is.

Pike! Yes!

So far have not seen Burnham or Saru; just Kirk, Khan and Spock, which I'm mixed on since I already have Kirk. But, definitely interested.

Someone in a Gold TOS/SNW uniform (likely Pike or Kirk) and Judge Q are the only ones I can make out for sure.

The all silver one could be Seven in her…gasp…Silver Catsuit. One of the guys in the gold TNG style uniforms has what looks like a silver diagonal stripe on his chest. So probably those two are Geordi and Worf.

And if that’s a blue DS9/Voyager style uniform we could be getting The Doctor, Dax or Bashir. If it’s a blue TOS/SNW uniform it has to be Spock.

Burnham and Saru ended up being a bit tough to find.

those are the only two I have never seen at retail.

I've found saru, Burnham, and all the TNG figures at Target, but it depends which store you visit. It's hit or miss. Most have Kirk, Spock, Khan, Picard, Saru, and Burnham. Data, followed by Riker, have been the hardest for me to find.

I'm glad to get more figures in yellow uniform.

I've had a rotating cast of three figures from the first wave of my releases on my desk for the past couple months, and it definitely looks most "correct" when it's one each yellow/red/blue. But Data's been the only yellow option. Glad Worf, Geordi, and Pike will soon be here to give him a break...

And again I flashback to how when I first heard about the new Playmates figures my first reaction was "I'll never buy one, but glad they're making them again!" How far I've gone down this road since then... I've bought three of every figure in the first wave!

Quite pleased with this wave. I'm glad they're looking likely to complete the TNG cast (looking forward to Troi and Bev next time hopefully) and it's cool to get Q.

Pike and Spock seemed obvious picks so great to have them too. Maybe Boimler and Mariner next wave?

Seven is a bit of an outlier, but I guess she'll go with Prodigy Janeway. It's not my favourite look for her, but it's probably the most iconic outfit, even if it was the most short-lived.

Still hoping for some DS9 love! Sisko, Kira and Dukat would be top of my wishlist.

Assuming that is Worf, Geordi and Seven, the Worf and Geordi make sense because the already have the basic molds for the TNG style torso/legs. There would just be some adjustment made for Worfs body type.

And for Seven, I’m sure it’s easier/cheaper to make her in the catsuit because it’s very simple. There is a lot more to her look in Picard.

which could also mean if that is Pike and Spock they could be in the Disco-TOS uniforms instead of the SNW uniforms since they have the male mold from Saru.

Wouldn't the extreme difference in body type preclude using the Saru torso on Spock & Pike? The SNW guys heads on Saru's long & thin torso would look bizarre.

Though also very possible I just don't understand toy production.

It would depend on how they did the molds. Toy manufacturers usually try and get the most bang for their buck by reusing molds of parts, like torsos, legs and arms, to absorb costs. So, theoretically, they could just use the torso tooling and combine it with more basic arms and legs to make the figure. It can be done without looking too odd.

right. They have the basic mold with the uniform design/details it would just be about adjusting height, width, etc…

I don’t think they would just keep the exact Saru body for Pike or Spock.

on the flip side, if they are the SNW uniforms that gives them another mold to use going forward.

Yeah, just doing a SNW male torso let's them make the entire male crew with some simple head swaps. However, with the exception of Prodigy, I don't get the sense we're getting the main cast of any show.

plus it wouldn’t take much to retool the SNW torsos into TOS torsos.

Seems quite likely we’ll get the full TNG crew if there’s a third wave.

I thought April was the new projected release date for the Prodigy stuff.

as for wave 2. It could be late this year or early next considering we don’t truly know who is in the wave.

I was looking at the Admiral Kirk figure at Target and was cracking up that the figure had a Shatner-accurate dad-bod instead of a more generic torso.
