I keep trying to look at this picture charitably but I can't see how:

a) This is a fun toy to play with

or

b) How it is a nice thing to display.

It looks flimsy, ugly and weird. Are they flat cardboard people laid down on the seats?

Yeah, that does not look good.

I realize I’m an adult and theoretically these figures/ships/accessories are for kids that won’t care. But…oof.

People must not have seen mock ups before.

I’m surprised. You don’t usually take a patronising tone with me.

I understand it’s a mock up. I just don’t think the product it is intended to mock up looks good.

After all, the purpose of a mock up is to give a person an idea of a thing. It doesn’t look (to me) like a good idea.

As a mock-up it very roughly conveys the general idea of a generic bridge playset with a lid that closes so it looks like a ship. I'm not sure we were meant to look at it too closely, since it only appears in that video for a very brief moment. But, being the detail-oriented fans that we are, of course we are going to pause it for closer inspection.

When it comes time for them to make an actual prototype, I would hope that (1) the outside actually looks like the USS Prodigy and not a cardstock printout of the Enterprise-E, (2) the interior is a decent representation of the colors and unique design aspects of the Prodigy bridge, (3) it's plastic with a proper sculpt instead of cardstock and foam core, and (4) it has that surround viewscreen/window thing like in the show, as well as play features such as electronic lights and sounds.

Bonus points if the ship exterior will have moving parts like in the show.

More of a question than patronizing. Apologies.

That assumes the mockup was intended for the public. Seems more like the kind of thing they would have put together for toy buyers for retail chains than something meant the hoi polloi to dissect.

Obviously they did put it out there anyways; but if it wasn't intended for a general audience, it could still be fit for the original purpose.

That's fair. I wonder if it was a test to see what pieces needed to be made and out of what? More proof of concept than anything else.

It was (hopefully) foolish of me to not recognise that flat card figures were just stand ins I think.

It seems more as you say, proof of concept. Especially considering the Enterprise E skin. A mock up of a mock up.

I will admit I'm puzzled as to why the buttons on the TOS-E are mounted from the "B/C Deck" bulge. The '90s version of the toy had them mounted upon that grey "strip" at the rear of the saucer, far less conspicuous. They were also a bit more flush, not standing as tall.

For shiggles, I would press the button that played the warp drive revving sound and just as it was finishing, I strike the photon torpedo button, suggesting a TOS version of the various warp jumps introduced with TMP.

Oh, for the member questioning the existence of a Next Generation Engine Room playset, it did in fact exist as I purchased one. Here are the results of a google search.

Indeed. Possibly meant for investors rather than fans. In any case, yeah I get the skepticism. Reminds me of some of the set mock ups I would see prebuilt to figure out filming.

Looks like a couple of figures have been spotted in the wild at a London comic con.

I think the original source is Facebook, but this video goes into some depth.

Picard and Riker look great. Definitely a little larger than the original 90s figures but not significantly. I love how they are using the original accessories - including the iconic lightsaber phasers! Can't wait to snip those beams off...

Burnham and Saru look pretty good too. Maybe the paint apps on Burnham's face aren't great, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Shouldn't be too much longer to wait.

Hmm... while the phasers with the beams look cool if you're doing an action scene, I wish they would have also included one without the beam, that could be attached to the belt.

They look pretty cool and the retro package design is a nice touch. The only thing that would bug me is if they are noticeable out of scale with the classic figures. Hopefully they'll be available soon.

Yeah even a small size difference is quite noticeable. I once got some Marvel Universe figures back when that line was a thing, assuming from a glance that they were in scale with my 3.75" figures such as Star Wars and that I could do some cool crossover stuff. But the Marvel figures were actually 4" which made them all look way taller than the Star Wars figures, so I had to put them all in crouching postures so they wouldn't tower over everyone. Even Wolverine, who is supposed to be shorter! And then more recently, I saw the newer line of smaller retro style Marvel figures and I assumed that they had kept the same scale as the previous line. But they turned out to actually be 3.75" instead of 4".

One of my biggest challenges is figuring out that blasted scale. Halo's current figures are technically 4" as well and they are close to working with the 3.75" with Star Wars, but not perfectly. :brickwall:
