Playmates Toys

I don't know why I thought engineering was never released. Brain fart I guess.

Looking closer at the figures on the website, did they change the hips? Or are those just prototype mockups with loosened hip joints? I'm only wondering because I never cared for the fact that the 90s figures had to sit all weirdly bow-legged. It just didn't look right when I sat my TOS Kirk on the captain's chair on the cardboard TOS bridge from that TOS crew collector's set. My stop motion adventures just look weird because of it.
I believe the new figures have ball joints at every point except the wrists and waist, so they should have no trouble sitting normally.

The TNG bridge is totally awesome but could be improved further. I always wanted swappable viewscreens instead of that Romulan Warbird!

But I doubt we'll get proper playsets. I'm not sure the toy market really does them in a big way now, even the Star Wars line which is much more established. IIRC they use crowdfunding for big playsets.
For big ones, yes, but they still have smaller sets that are very popular, including the Tantive IV corridor, Emperor's Throne Room, and some sets from the Mandalorian. It's still possible, but a little more niche.

And once in a while the Star Wars Vintage Collection line will (re) release a mid-range vehicle such as Slave 1 or the TIE Fighter, like they have in the last couple years. The Haslab crowdfunded stuff is more premium level, more expensive, and limited release. So if you miss out, and you want one bad enough, you end up having to pay four times the original price or more on the secondary market.

Yeah, I don't do the Haslab stuff. To me, that's a bit excessive but I am not a traditional collector. I buy toys to play with them.

I wouldn’t be so sure…the press release and recent adverts featuring John De Lancie as Q have all mentioned forthcoming ‘environments’, which I take as playsets and alien planets etc.

Yes, that's what prompted the discussion. I guess environments could be more basic cardboard backdrops etc. Fingers crossed for the Protostar bridge!
I remember those cardboard backdrops from the various collector's box sets. I had the TOS bridge one. Weren't there also special stands that came with those too? Like one had a piece of holodeck floor for the character to stand on? Even if that is what's meant as opposed to actual plastic playsets, that's still fun.

Some of the promotional stuff for the new line showed a Protostar ship toy where the top of the saucer section flips out and has a small bridge on it. It was clearly a cardboard mockup, but it's likely the direction they're going.

Holy shit that sounds awesome!
It wasn't much to look at. It looked like they had just cut up some photos of the Enterprise-E into the shape of the Protostar as a mock-up. It was floating around Twitter when the Prodigy toys were first revealed. I've been trying to track it down but haven't had much luck.

With today's techniques of 3d modeling, 3d scanning, and 3d printing could you imagine how detailed they'd be this time around?
Depends on how much money they want to spend. Current run Micro Machines feel about the same as past releases, save for maybe slightly lighter weight materials, a little bit nicer detailing.

Should there be a new toy line, then one of the things that companies will be looking at is WHO they'll be marketing to... If they're marketing to kids, that'll lead to a whole different set of requirements than if they were trying to market to ME.

As an adult collector of ships/memorabilia, I'm willing to pay more to have a display of the Enterprise D. I'm not playing with it... I'm not smashing it in battle scene reenactments. It sits on a stand on my desk. But I have specific wants for what I'm investing in... true-to-life scaling, fine details and good quality.

If you're expecting toy makers to market this to kids, then expect shoddy craftsmanship, registry errors in artwork overlays and the like...
