Playmates Toys

I just hope, it will be the first of many waves and that we will have a renaissance of good ol' Playmates times with some great character designs. They made the right decision to go retro packaging, because this is very popular right now. Marvel did it with the Spider-Man Animation series figures from the 90s, when they re-released them recently. It just looks great and catchy! :)
Given that they have supposedly hired at least one original artist from Playmates Trek heyday in the 90s I imagine that the retro packaging is going to continue and they will balance new and the old, with DS9 being featured alongside Prodigy or something like that.

I really like these thoughts. :) Lets hope!

Yeah, not to forget the Ent-D. All three of JLs ships. :luvlove:

I know this is going to get me people with pitchforks coming after me but I’m not much of a fan of the Enterprise-D. I have Ent-E and Stargazer models but no Enterprise-D and I doubt I’d add one if Playmates made one (doesn’t mean I wouldn’t appreciate it if they made one tho, I’d be happy for my fellow TNG fans). I just can’t get myself to really like her.

And now I’m gonna run and hide

Glad I'm not the only one. The ENT-D was one ship that never grew on me. I pretty much ignored most of the establishing shots in TNG if I did watch it. I would not spend money on a model of it if I could help it.

I like her 80s beige design interior (but still not as much as the Ent-E’s or the Stargazer’s) but the exterior is… yeeeesh, no. Not for me. :shifty:

I think the only appeal for D for me was the transporter room. Too much beige (reminds me of my work and I don't like beige) and the exterior is unbalanced mess.

I got the bridge playset and TNG figures out of storage - it's got to be one of the coolest toys of all time!

I was probably least interested in the new Picard, Riker and Data figures, but I'm really looking forward to them now. Data might be able to sit at his station properly! Riker won't have a ripped uniform and bizarre hands!

So, quite perfect for that awesome timeless bridge set. :)

I'm curious, if they will ever release a bridge Set again...

Well they've probably still got the molds... But I'd be surprised, playsets are very costly to produce and take up a huge amount of space.

But they did one for the '09 Trek movie, right? That looked quite nice. The figures from that movie did not btw.

Let's see what's out there! :)

Kinda.. each figure came with a different station and you had to buy them all to build the bridge. But then wave 2 was cancelled so it was never completed. It wasn't a proper 1990s style playset.

Okay, I never saw it in real life, only in pictures..., so I did not remember it properly...

But was the quality of the '09 figures that bad? I only know the figures from Internet pictures...

I mean I kind of liked them. They were a bit small even for 3.75 figures, and all of them looked like they had lip gloss, but in terms of being action figures meant for children they were decent. The packaging I thought was great.

Didn't they do two scales? The 6" figures weren't high end enough for collectors so they were a total waste of space. They made a huge mistake then not going for the same 4.5" scale as the 90s line, which fortunately they've corrected this time.

Especially considering the upcoming wave of the figures, to me half of the magic is the announced retro packaging.

Since the subject of figures with fabric clothing (aka "soft goods") was brought up, there are some newer premium, larger scale Star Trek figures that are made that way. I think Exo 6 is the only company doing those now for Trek. Unfortunately a lot of times the production run is limited, so you have to get in really early for pre-order. For instance, this upcoming Picard is already sold out: https://exo-6.com/products/pre-order-captain-jean-luc-picard

Or there's always Mego if you are okay with less realism: https://megofigures.com/product/captain-picard-star-trek-next-generation/

I’d gladly buy those newer Jean-Lucs… if only either of them looked like Jean-Luc ;) (like I said, I’m extremely picky and I can tell if someone actually bothered to REALLY look at his face before producing an action figure)
