Playmates Toys

The Playmates B was used on screen in FC as the golden model in the display case that Picard slams his rifle into ;)

Most recently, the Playmates Ent-B made a background appearance in Breaking Bad: El Camino.

Concerning Trek themed contests, far more frustrating was the one that tied into the early days of "Next Generation". During the first year Cheerios ran a contest with the grand prize being a silent "walk on" sometime during the second year. Mercy only knows how many boxes of cereal I purchased. In my area, it was only the "Honey Nut" variety that promoted the "walk on". (I much preferred "classic" Cheerios.) Like Willy Wonka, one certain box held the golden, uh, gold pressed latinum ticket. Obviously, I didn't get the ticket.

Years passed. It was the mid 90s and I attended a discussion panel at dragon-Con, an Atlanta based genre convention. The panel members were some "behind the scenes" people involved with Next Gen. Sorry, I don't remember whom. Audience members asked questions; the panel members asked as best they could. Raising my hand at every opportunity, they finally pointed at me.

"Excuse me, but whatever happened with the bloody Cheerios contest, the one promising a "walk on" during the second year? I never read or heard who won it, when they cameoed or anything."

"Oh, that? Yeah... You guys aren't going to like this."

Murmurs from the crowd "buzzed" in the air.

"Some lil' ol' lady who was a compulsive contest entrant, the kind of person that enters anything and everything won it."

From the audience, "When did she 'walk on'?"

"Uh, she didn't. She didn't care for the prize. Wasn't a Trek fan. As I said, she just craved entering contests."

From the chorus of groans and grumbles, I feared the fans might have rioted!

I can't recall if there was a cash substitute.

Can you imagine?! Trek was finally back on TV, and the "chance of a lifetime" was squandered by somebody who didn't even care for the subject. She just had to satisfy her gambling "itch"!

Grown ass... "men" playing with toys. No wonder the rest of the world thinks Star Trek fans are losers.

The irony makes me grin. :D

oh man it's really frustrating - for such a chance I would have sawed off my left leg

Yeah I saw it advertised in Star Trek Monthly when I was a kid and desperately wanted it. When I finally saw the thing in a shop and realised it was small and didn't even have lights and sounds I lost interest.

I guess they needed to make it smaller to be cost-effective with the transformer functions. I still think it's pretty cool though.

DST did a full-size version of the AGT Enterprise to go alongside their standard model.

I never saw it in shops which is why it surprised me! I assumed it was Playmates being lazy, simply adapting their existing Enterprise model to house an extra nacelle. It’s odd that they scaled it down. I can only guess it’s so they took up less space on the shelves in shops and so were more attractive to sellers.

I’ve only ever collected the Playmates line, but some of the DST models look amazing. Particularly the Enterprise D, but it seems very hard to come by on eBay :-(

I have all of the action figures pretty much. I've customised hundreds of extra characters and variations of released characters too. Your page looks great. I wish I'd thought of that.

Hey, if this is directed at me, thank you very much! I have so many more figures, ships and accessories to photograph and write about. Life just keeps getting in the way a bit of late! I’d love to see photos of your collection, in particular the customs. I’m working on quite a few myself currently!

a question in the round - I have this trading card - I know that this is a card that should actually be packed for the Spock figure from the Classic line - but why was it not packed?
Spock is the only figure in the Classic line that does not have a trading card

Wow! Good find, I didn’t realise they’d ever produced a card for Spock.

I once heard that Leonard Nimoy did not give his ok for the motif and the figure was therefore sold without a trading card

Yup you’re right, Leonard Nimoy wasn’t happy with the image they used and so vetoed the card being released with the figure. For the main cast, Playmates always had to obtain permission for their figures from the actors and also wherever their likeness was used (on cards, space caps etc). Supporting actors and guest actors weren’t given that luxury!

Many years ago I came across a bad picture of this trading card on a Star Trek collector's page and then did some research and came across the story - that Leonard Nimoy did not agree to this trading card. And now I found this trading card at a trading card collector who also said that it is rare - I knew what the card was made for.
On the trading card side I also saw a "prototype" of an Admiral Riker trading card - maybe it will come across again.
a great treasure for my blog

The packaging for that Movie Spock figure was also changed to remove the reference to the trading card. Nimoy's refusal must have been irritating for Playmates!

I'm not sure why Nimoy would have vetoed that image, it's not unflattering and is a pretty good picture of Spock being Spock.
