Player booked for diving had actually died

^Well yeah, but most refs would have done the same. How many of them would have thought "Oh, he's having a heart attack?".

The ref does feel like shit. It sucks. Here's the email I got today from an assignor regarding this...

Simulating a foul. R***** and you would have had card in hand.

For those who don't know, I'm an NCAA soccer referee, and my buddy R***** is an MLS referee. We're both known for our "by the book" reputation.

We all know it's fun to hate referees. We all know referees are the bad guys. In fact, when I'm teaching classes, I point out to new referees that "The other team, that's just the opponent. The referee? That's the enemy"

It's a hard job that sometimes requires being an overconfident asshole to do the job right. Sometimes that bites you in the ass. It's the nature of the beast, and it's something we all accept.

The story here isn't the referee, but the tragic loss of such a young life.

In the big scheme of things, the fact he approached him holding a card is completely irrelevant. I don't suppose the ref feels bad about that, it didn't make the guy any more or less dead. :vulcan:
