Planning early...

So I'm thinking about either buying tickets for everyone I know, or just renting out a theater on opening night if I can get a big discount.

If I rent out the theater (one screen, not the entire complex) they allow catering. I could make it a big Christmas Star Trek party, invite friends and family and invite a meetup group. The ticket is a gift, but everyone will be urged to donate to a charity, and depending on how well I do in the year, I'll match the donations. (Undecided on which charity. I like The Smile Train, Dogs for the Deaf, Animal Welfare Institute, and a few others.)

What does everyone else have planned? This'll be a special night. I'm hoping everyone at least brings a few friends to see the movie when they go.

I'm planning to buy a bottled water, a large buttered popcorn and put way too much salt on it.

Which is what I do whenever I go to the movies.

Large Coke, Large Popcorn and a box of Sno-caps.

Maybe a pizza slice or an order of Chicken fingers since it's a special occasion.

I'll probably just go see the movie with my brother and sneak some food in. I may get a poutine and a popcorn or something at the theatre.

You're right about planning early. I don't even know which bar I'll be at on New Year's Eve 2007 -- forget how I'm going to see a movie on Christmas 2008!

^^ Your theater has that? Nice. Had movie theater hot dogs, not bad but not as good as ones at the ballpark.

Big Cherry Coke, small popcorn, sneak in a bag of Resses' Pieces should hold me for a while.

While on the subject, how long before the movie do you (all of you) plan on showing up for that all important best seat in the house? I'm not expecting a full house (would like to see that though) but I'll likely be there an hour before.

Yeah.. we have a couple of theatres that have pretty kick ass food. Gotta smuggle your own Sno-Caps into the AMC theatre in Danvers, though!!

Movie theatres out here have full service fa(s)t food. Walk in the door and you're surrounded by every imaginable combination of grease and fat, at prices 50% more than what it costs to clog your arteries outside those doors.

^ And that fact surprises you how? (the prices that is) Everything is at least 50% more than they should be. That doesn't stop us from stuffing our holes though does it? At least in the winter it's easier to hide a can of your favorite beverage. (in Minnesota anyway)

I live in Canada. I wear a parka to the movie theatre in July.

To be honest, though, one day I walked into my theatre with too fresh bags full of Quizno subs and they didn't say a word to us. It was glorious.

50%!? That's a deal! What theater do you go to? My theater charges $3.00 for a small (read 16 oz) container of popcorn, a hot dog is $3.50, and a small coke is $3.50 (12 oz). Nachos (as in, they throw some stale chips in a plastic container and give you a Fritos can of cheese, a very small Fritos can of cheese) are $5. This of course, was my last trip there, when I saw Rush Hour 3.

In America, they have Quiznos sniffing dogs at the door. You can't bring stuff in under penalty of getting eaten by rabid dogs.

Some theatres will have gagh-sniffing Targs for just such a scenario.

You think we're the only ones planning ahead??

So, it appears everyone wants heart disease and/or cancer.

For a premiere night movie, you'll want to pre-order your tickets and show up two hours (or more) in advance.

For "The Menagerie" I showed up a half hour before the showing thinking it was going to be empty and I walked in and there were only a few seats left.

"Star Trek" is going to be a big mainstream flick. If you're going to a regular theater and you haven't rented out a row of seats or the whole thing, you really should get there several hours in advance if you live in a big city.

Nothing is worse than having to sit in the first row and look straight up for two hours.

Also, never go to AMC theaters. They use inferior projectors and screens. Harkins seems decent.

We have a Danbarry multiplex with stadium seating, real THX surround systems, and hi-resolution projectors in every theater, and fortunately, it's a first run theater (except for the Simpsons where it started a week later than others. <grrr> )

I just checked with Harkins and apparently I may be able to rent out a theatre for free if all profits go to the charity! Awesome!
