I recently installed the latest version of Stellarium but am encountering a few problems with its operation. Does anyone have experience and/or recommendations with planetarium software for the complete newbie?

I installed the latest today but didn't check it out until now. Dang, it's not loading. My little girl is going to be pissed at me.

Stellarium 0.9.0 does seem a little buggy, so hopefully the next release will fix that. You might want to consider installing the previous version which was much less resource intensive and seemed to work fine.

Stellarium 0.8.2

I was having some difficulty in getting the location set in Stellarium properly. That seems to be set alright, now. It's been pretty smooth thereafter. I like Celestia as well, so major thanks to TGT for that suggestion. Each program seems to have its use, and the graphics for each are sharp.

So noted, and I will do just that. I have the install for 0.9 still , so I can go back to that if need be. What bugs did you encounter, Warp Core? There seems to be some oddities with graphics, a sort of ghostly flickering, depending upon where the cursor was located

Celestia's a nice little app that I've played about with a fair bit - well worth the bandwidth required for the download

After rebooting I tried Stellarium .9 again and after setting up my defaults everything worked perfect so far. The girls are running around looking for Jupiter and then back to the laptop to make sure they got the right one.

Now they want to find Pluto. Should I tell them to stick with planets?

I still get an annoying flicker wherever my cursor happens to be on the screen. but other than that... Stellarium v 09. seems to be working fine.

Nothing major on my end. I was having some trouble with choppy rendering, but that seems to have been solved with a clean installation. Also, I was unable to change the screen resolution in the program itself but was able to fix that by editing Stellarium's config.ini file manually.

It's working perfectly now. :)

Nope, nothing like that at all, and I don't see anything in the bug reports about it. Could be a video card/driver issue, maybe?

That's what I'm afraid it is. I run a ATI All-In-Wonder, but I'm positive the drivers are up to date. Ehh... it's not that big of an issue, so long as I keep the cursor to the side.
