Planet of the Dead monsters SPOILERS

Cos I'm fucked if I can find the bit that tells you how to do spoiler tags on here, and the way it's done elsewhere doesn't work.

So..

According to DigitalSpy (and fitting in with stuff we already knew) they're called Tritovores, and they are half man, half fly creatures that eat lifeforce and memories, and look "really disgusting"

And RTD apparently hopes to bring them back in the finale...

the Daily Mirror claims they're appearing in all the specials and that they hope to make them as memorable as Daleks and Cybermen since these are "the only monsters anyone remembers"

spoiler tags are done via the smilie with the X mouth at the end of the row above the reply box...

It's from a tabloid (DS is just repeating from the Mirror), but I'd say they've at least got the monster description right this time. Not sure they'll really be in all the specials, though.

yeah I think the general idea of what the aliens are is true, but anything after that take with a pinch of salt

I think anyone aiming to create an alien as memorable as the Daleks or the Cybermen, is going to be disappointed, I knew what a Dalek was before I saw any Doctor Who, they are that much in British culture.

however the title of best recurring new series alien is still wide open for the taking.

isn't the daily mirror like the inquirer that reports alien babies and stuff?

no. that'd be the Daily Sport. although these days that tends toward concentrating on sex, boobs, sex, dogging, sex, ass, sex and knobs. and sex.

the Daily Mirror's actually a fairly decent 'red-top' tabloid. it's better than the Scum. sorry, Sun. or the Daily Star. and certainly better than the facist right-wing hate-rag the Daily Mail or the Diana-obsessed Daiy Express.

not that I know of

I would say the Ood have been fairly memorable. They're no match for the Daleks or Cybermen of course, but I'm not sure anything COULD be.

Well to be fair, the classic series ran for a MUCH longer time, and they never came up with anything half as good either. Unless you count the Sontarans. Which I don't. lol

^ fair point

Dont see what you have against the Sontarans, they seem to be well remembered pre there appearnce in newWho, and the new series Sontarans seem to have been a success.

And the Cybermen weren't really that successful with audiences their first time out. It was just that the production team kept on using them again and again during the Troughton years.

actually NewWho has some good one off aliens, but when it comes to recurring aliens I think it is lacking in that departments, most of the best one off aliens just would not work a second time around.

the Sontarans have two books coming out, they have done quite well out of the new series.

I would love to see more of the Sycroax but it does not seem likely.

The weird thing for me is that after the Daleks and Cybermen, the most memorable monsters from "Classic Who" aren't recurring monsters like the Silurians or Ice Warriors, but the Zygons, who only ever appeared in one story.

Just color me relieved that they are trying to establish new monsters/villains and not just pulling out the Darleks/Cybermen again.

Now I only hope that these new monsters are not carbon copies of the established ones: please no "destroy the universe for evil's sake" goals, please no one-liner catch phrases "Delete!" "Exterminate!", heck...no catch phrases at all, and please actually give them a 3-dimentional motivation that makes them somewhat realistic.

But...but...how on earth would they make toys out of characters with no catch-phrases or easily-digestible motivation?
